Wye – Kent’s Super Village

The Times newspaper has placed Wye in Kent in the top three villages in the UK

The farmers market on The Green every other weekend is one of many reasons Wye is so popular. Many years ago now, I even ran one of the stalls.

So what is it about the village of Wye that creates it’s extraordinary reputation?

Unlike many villages in my part of Kent that are equally as pretty and have local facilities, it has a selection of lovely shops including a florist, gift shop and bakery as well as a café, good pubs and restaurants such as the excellent Wife of Bath.

When I’m valuing in the village, I often have a quick browse, pick up a coffee and croissant or nip into the general store.

Wye is surrounded by some gorgeous North Downs countryside where I love to walk my dogs when I have time. There’s also a Cycle Route that you can follow to Chilham and Canterbury which is to have a new café soon too.

I spent hundreds of happy hours as a teenager flying radio-controlled gliders on the Downs just above the Wye Crown.

Many people rate the village for it’s 3 schools The Lady Joanna Thornhill primary school, Spring Grove preparatory school and the Wye Free School.

Older children who live locally can also use the village station to travel to schools in Canterbury or Ashford such as Kings Junior school which provides an escorted service.

Commuters, or simply those travelling to London regularly, also use the station and change at Ashford for HS1 which only takes 38 minutes to London St Pancras. It’s handy for just a shopping trip or a night out in Canterbury too.

If you are lucky enough to live in Wye, you can get to so many places in the surrounding area. Both Ashford and Canterbury are a big draw but lots of people also spend time at the coast at Whitstable or Hythe for instance.

One of my favourite stops on the outskirts of the village is the Perry Court farm shop, there are lots of thriving farm shops in the local area and they are growing all the time with local produce.

If Wye doesn’t have enough pubs of its own (there are 3!) then there are some other great country ones in the area that serve delicious food one of my favourites is the Five Bells at Brabourne  and don’t miss the Compasses Inn at Crundale.

I’m really lucky to spend so much time working in Wye and I’m so pleased to see it get the recognition it deserves but there are many other wonderful villages in my area too numerous to mention, this really is a lovely part of Kent to base yourself in if you’re on the move.
