Smarden Cricket Club

Cricket has been played at the Smarden CC home ground known as ‘The Minnis’ since its first recorded game back against local neighbours Frittenden back in August 1771.

‘The Minnis’ was once the ground to the country house known as ‘Gilletts’, a large house located next to the club with connections to India and Ceylon along with other 15/16th Century Houses in the village.

The Smarden CC team joined the Kent Village (Sunday) League Division 6 in 2000 and have risen towards the top of the First Division with the ‘Class of 2000’, but with retirements and emigrations they are holding their Second Division place with a good standard.

On Saturdays the club encourages younger players to come through the ranks aided by Saturday morning junior nets. A 20/20 team appear mid week on summer nights and have had success in local competitions for the ‘modern’ player.

There is an occasional meet up by the ‘Gentlemen of Smarden’ who play 3-4 prestigious matches against the Rainmen, Sunday Times Occasionals, Standard Athletic Club Paris, and last year Royal Hague CC. A team of young and old maintain the traditions of village cricket matching the opposition depending on strength.

We can call upon ex-Kent League and MCC members to blend in with occasional and new residents. Although most of the teams have players that are born or are living in the village, the club welcomes those with a genuine community interest in cricket and its other social aspects.
