The Chequers on the Green pub

Country dining, wine and ale, in a beautiful old Kentish inn.

Located in the lovely old village of High Halden, which is recorded in the Domesday Book, the Chequers on the Green (formerly known as “The Chequers”) is a Grade II listed building, with some parts dating back to medieval times. There has been an inn on the same site since 1442 and it is said that some of the oak beams and floors upstairs are actually made from old galleons.

In the mid 18th century, The Chequers was frequented by local gangs and smugglers who enjoyed the local ales as much as the customers do today!

These days, the team at the pub are proud to serve generous portions of freshly prepared food throughout the day selecting some of the best local ingredients where possible, alongside a great selection of interesting ales and lagers from local brewers and a carefully selected wine list.
