Report on trade: Demand for well bred cattle continues to bubble along near to boiling point as demonstrated by the trade this spring for particularly first calved heifers and cows and calves. The top bred bulls are also in demand with the auction record price for a Sussex bull broken again in the Ashford sale ring. A large entry of maiden heifers met good demand and the sale again produced good averages with the weather encouraging grazing farmers to ringside too.
The society show was judged by Barry Noakes (Trottenden) and 2 bulls stood out L Stevens and Sons Boxted Wellington 5th and Chandler and Dunn’s Goldstone Regent 3rd. The Regent bull was Champion and Wellington reserve.
Females as pairs saw Chandler and Dunn stand up again in the in calvers (1st and 2nd) with Earl de la Warr and L Stevens and Sons taking first and second respectively in the maidens and 2 more de la Warr pairs 3rd and 4th. Female champion was Goldstone Iris 55th with reserve Buckhurst Jane 17th.
Sale commenced with cows and calves from the Wetland Trust making 1350gns and then the run of 6 calved heifers from Torry Hill Farms which sold from 1950gns to 2800gns for Torry Hill Gentian 14th with a bull calf by Spenmoss General 6th purchased by John Paine Farms, Lydd, Romney Marsh.

The sale of bulls saw records broken when Goldstone Duke 3rd made 5,600gns to Sutton Estates Berkshire Estate. Champion and reserve both made 3800gns and both went to Oxfordshire. Goldstone Regent 3rd to Rupert Soames and Boxted Wellington 5th to J H Norman and Sons (P Brown), Bicester. The 3rd Goldstone bull made 3000gns to a new herd owner; Price-Whitehead from Tenterden, Kent. The Wetland Trust sold 8 in calf heifers to 1125gns and they all are now in Norfolk on the Ravingham Estate and Chandler and Dunn sold in calvers to 1250gns.

Stars in the maiden heifer stakes included the 4 Royal Farms heifers at 900 to 1050gns while L Stevens and Sons regular consignment topped at 1050gns. The trade was very even through the rest with feeders taking a share particularly from the out wintered runs.

Breeding Cattle – 178 Females, calves and bulls Sold – Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688

Petworth pedigree Sussex herd reduction sale – This was a landmark day for the Sussex cattle breed here in the South East with the offering of a substantial part of the Petworth herd for sale following a major change in farming policy on the Petworth Estate in West Sussex owned by Lord and Lady Egremont. Records suggest there have been red cattle of ‘Sussex type’ on the estate for over 200 years, the third Lord Egremont was a founding member of the breed society and pedigrees of cattle on the estate have been registered since the late 1800’s.
The sales of the Poplars and Maplesden herds in the early 2000’s and the Chelsfield dispersal in the late 1970’s have been similar landmark sales. Each of these events have produced records for the breed as did this Petworth sale. The sale of the bull Petworth Poll Glow-worm 2nd for 6200gns to Sam and David Morgan, Paddock Wood, Kent was an individual auction record while averages of 2243gns for cows and calves and those in all other catagories surpassed all other herd sales of cattle of the Sussex bred.
In the sale ring cows and spring calves lead the way from the start with a Petworth Marianne 2005 born cow with bull calf by Mayfield General 3rd making 3000gns and then, fifth in the ring, an older (2001) born Marianne making the same figure with a bull calf by Petworth Poll Wellington 5th. The Royal Farms, Windsor and Terry Shead of the Brookside Garden Centre, Paddock Wood, Kent were the respective purchasers. Other favoured female lines included the very old Knots, Honestys and Gipsy’s as well as the strong females of the Stonesdowm family. Making 2800gns were Gondolia 2nd bought by Plumpton Agricultural College, Lewes; Stonesdown 27th to Mrs Vanessa McDonald, Canterbury; Valentino 111th to The Royal Farms; Knot 181st to Mrs McDonald and Carnation 138th to J Paine Farms, Lydd, Romney Marsh. Four further couples made 2700gns. The strength of the demand through the whole run of cows and calves, with only 5 making less than 2000gns was the main feature of the sale.
In calf cows saw B W Kemsley and Sons, Maidstone pay 2700gns for Poll Stonesdown 2nd and 2200gns for Stonesdowm 36th while The Royal Farms secured Poll Stonesdown 7th for 2200gns.
1700gns to 2400gns covered most of the in calf heifers, due to calf late autumn. 2500gns secured Valentino 18th for Robert Wilkins of Billingshurst while 2400gns was paid by the Royal Farms for a Poll Stonesdown heifer.
Final female section was the maidens born September 2011 to June 2012 which consistently made 950 to 1300gns with the top call 1350 for Petworth Poll Marianne 15th from Mrs S Shone, Buriton, Petersfield, Hampshire.
Two over 2 year old bulls drew final bids of 3500 and 3600gns and are off to work in Berkshire (Royal Farms) and Hampshire (Box Farm Partners). The first of the junior bulls brought bidding of 6200gns and others made 2900gns to 3200gns twice.
The offering attracted interest from breeders from the far west in Cornwall, throughout the south of England and north as far as Yorkshire. Following the completion of the sale records show 34 individuals purchased cattle spreading Petworth blood far and wide within the breed.
Averages – 44 Cows and calves to 3,000gns aver 2223gns (£2340); 15 In calf cows to 2700gns aver 1833gns (£1925); 30 In calf heifers to 2500gns aver 1815gns (£1815); 36 Maiden heifers to 1350gns aver 1164gns (£1225); 8 bulls to 6200gns aver 3640gns (£3832).

Sale report – Friday 19th October 2012

Sussex Cattle Societies Autumn Show and Sale of Pedigree Breeding Cattle – 8 Bulls and 39 Females Sold – Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688

Report on trade: After last autumns only steady demand for younger stock the entry of cattle for this event was smaller than recent years. Size and quality was a little varied too in the younger females but all stock met a healthy demand in the sale ring.

Show time saw the bulls judged in a ring by Donald Masters (Goudhurst) with the “bull of the season” Chandler and Dunn’s Regent 6th of Goldstone winning the senior class and then championship as well as best weight recorded bull. Best of the junior bulls was the Hind’s Mayfield Poll Captain 7th. A C I Seaman and Son exhibited Trottenden heifer Terpsichore 124th, in calf to a Boxted bull, was best individual female with Colin Godmans Koskimo 4th, a maiden was reserve. Judged as pairs Mrs Susanna Carter won the in calf class.
In the sale ring we held a minutes silence in memory of Tom Hide who had so many friends in Sussex cattle breeding circles and then continued with the business of the day starting with the cows and calves. P Piper sold Beechbrook Fairmaid and her bull calf for 1,400 gns; L Stevens and Sons sold strong Boxted cows and calves to 1,450 gns twice with top priced couple being an in calf Trottenden cow with registered heifer calf making 1,625gns.
The bulls came next with champion first which made 5,250 gns to the Sir Richard Sutton Settled Estates, Berkshire; a Petworth polled bull Wellington 5th made 3,400 gns to R Parsons, Wadhurst and 2 other bulls at 3,000 gns being Allen’s Major 1st to K Mills and Sons and Spenmoss Playboy (an * pure, pure!) to Lord de la Warr’s Buckhurst Estate.
Back to females with 2 in calvers from the Torry Hill making 1,075 gns including an * Daffodil born in May 2010 and the Trottenden champion heifer 1,000 gns. Another Trottenden Terpischore heifer also made 1,000 gns from C E & W S Millson. The strong maiden heifers made to 840 gns from Colin Godmans Farm .
A relatively small but at the same time good days business for the breed and its breeders and it was certainly good to see plenty of interest in cattle both around the pens and in the sale ring.

Averages: 3 In calf cows 850gns; 13 Cows and calves 1417gns; 8 bulls 2,560gns; 14 In calf heifers 927gns; 5 maiden heifers (bn autumn 10) 795 gns and 3 younger maiden heifers 490 gns.

Sale report – Friday 20th April 2012

Sussex Cattle Societies Spring Show and Sale of Pedigree Breeding Cattle – 9 Bulls and 118 Females Sold – Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688

Report on trade: A generally good quality entry of stock was penned for the event and with breeding cattle meeting very strong demand through the whole country this Sussex sale was no exception. The show element of the day was judged by the senior herd person for the Hind family Mrs Brenda Hide and she chose the Stevens family’s bull Mayfield Intelligent 1st as senior class winner and the champion. Chandler and Dunn Ltd presented the reserve champion male and best junior Duke 6th of Goldstone. In the females, judged in the pens, champion female came from Isfield Place Estate, a Trottenden Wellington 3rd sired maiden heifer while a pair of Millson bred Trottenden heifers by their own Desppoy 13th bull were best pair of maidens. From the short entry of in calf heifers M D & S Rees were judged best pair. These were classes kindly sponsored by the Farmers Guardian.
Come sale time and when the first run of cows and calves came through we knew we were in for an exciting 2 hours. M Wilsons 3 young cows with spring calves made 1480, 1425 and 1475gns; C E & W S Millsons similar cow and calf made 1550gns and then Denyer and Sheppard sold young cows and calves at 1525 and 1500gns and 2 in calvers 1200gns. The first of 3 herd reductions and dispersals came next with Brinsbury Colleges 8 strong cows and calves which averaged 1537gns from a top of 1600gns.
The champion bull from L Stevens and Sons made 3400gns to Chandler and Dunn Ltd and the reserve champion 2300gns to C Somerset. L Stevens and Sons 2 young bulls made 2900 and 2800gns and then a 2008 Newsome bred 2008 born bull Friths General 2nd made 3100gns to R Ruthven.Even through the older bulls offered all went to new homes to breed.
In calf heifers were a scarce commodity and the strong trade continued with the M D & S Rees seeing their 6 sell to 1250gns and average 1145gns. Then the maiden heifers were offered and C E & W S Millson were the first to see theirs making 1000gns or more for 6 out of their 9 with Trottenden Belle 25th, the reserve best female, making 1050gns to Andrew and Sue Grange, Truro, Cornwall. Selling continued at similar levels reflecting age and size in the runs of heifers with the vast majority going to new homes to breed with the other highlights being J C & C Lewis 9 18mth old heifers making to 980gns and averaging 828gns and Isfield Place Estate seeing their champion maiden make 960gns and the run of 8 (which were not sold last autumn!) averaged 878gns.
The 2 herd dispersals completed the days business and herd builders were still around the ring. Julia Craven from Cidermill Farm, Newdigate sold her in calf cows to 1500gns and with young calves to 1600gns while Colin Godmans Farm sold their late summer calving cows with strong calves to 1450gns (twice).
It was pleasing to see cattle from the sale dispersed around the south of England with major buyers present from Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Essex and Cornwall. If you have pedigree cattle to sell there is demand and on Tuesday 22nd May we will focus on breeding cattle within our regular livestock trading day.

Averages: 20 In calf cows 1109gns; 23 Cows and calves 1462gns; 9 bulls 2,366gns; 51 maiden heifers (bn spring and Summer 10) 862 gns and 5 younger maiden heifers 454 gns.
Top breeders consignments: C E & W S Millson 9 heifers to 1050gns av 995gns; L Stevens and Sons 5 heifers to 940gns av 853gns; Earl de la Warr 5 to 870gns av 816gns.

Autumn 2011 – ‘Sussex Cattle Day – Friday 21st October 2011’

Breeding Cattle including Sussex Cattle Societies Autumn Show and Sale of Pedigree Cattle – 2 Bulls and 117 Females Sold – Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688

Report on trade: As we are hearing from around the country trade for purebred and pedigree stock is more selective than we have seen for some years now with a higher proportion of stock ending up in the hands of feeders. Premiums available for the better bred stock were also not substantial when you look at the strong feeding and slaughter beef cattle trade. Despite these comments above a large number of females found new homes and breeding demand was present throughout the majority of the sale but the number of bulls offered was disappointing and we look to catalogue substantially more again in the spring.

The show element of the day rewarded C E & W S Millson with another championship in the bull lines with Trottenden Monarch with C D & J Bishop reserve with Spratsbourne Glow-worm 1st. In the females Chandler and Dunn took the individual honours with in calf heifer Goldstone Snowdrop 187th and best pair of in calvers with their other 2 entries, Snowdrop 185th and Shadow 1st of Goldstone. In the maiden heifer pens Mrs P Davenport exhibited the first prize pair, Shirrenden Princess 44th and Whisketts Princess 1st. Alan Mummery was society judge for the day.
In the sale ring Dernwood Farm LLP (the Bannister family) kicked of proceedings with their herd dispersal where the 2006 bn cow Dernwood Gentle 16th with her bull calf made 1075 gns and in calf cows topped at 950gns twice. A & A Barr Farms sold 2 cows and calves at 1225gns (Holm Place Louise 7th bn 2004) and 1150 gns (Chapel Louise 1st, bn 2007).
Two out of three bulls offered sold with the 2006 born Petworth Stargazer 1st making 1900gns for B W Kemsley and Sons and E H Holdstock and Sons purchasing Trottenden Monarch for 2000gns
700 to 900gns covered the majority of the in calf heifers sold from Torry Hill Farms, A D Kinnear, Chandler and Dunn, Brookside Garden Centre and Earl de la Warr. In the maiden heifers breeder interest focused principally on the runs from J C & C Lewis and Mrs P Davenport . Three of the Davenport offering made 860 and 880gns to Mrs A Gerrard, Nutley, Uckfield.
Averages: 15 In calf cows 769gns; 15 Cows and calves 1,032gns; 2 bulls 1,950gns; 21 In calf heifers 83gns; 43 maiden heifers 628gns and 5 younger maiden heifers 390gns.
Top breeders consignments: Torry Hill Farms 6 in calf heifers 900gns to 680gns, av 833; Earl de la Warr 6 heifers 900gns to 860gns av 833; Mrs P Davenport 5 heifers 880gns to 600gns av 766.

Sanche Limousin herd dispersal sale report – Tuesday 20th September 2011

99 Females and 6 bulls Sold in the Sanche dispersal. Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon

Report on trade: The instructions to carry out this major herd dispersal sale of pedigree and purebred Limousin breeding cattle followed the decision of Grigg Farms to cease active farming. From confirmed instructions in mid July the sale date was set and a programme of promotion, both nationally and locally, was put in place and the build up to the sale began. A catalogue was produced 2 weeks ahead of the sale and then the cattle were received in the market the day prior to the sale, all the females pregnancy scanned and then numbered and lairaged for the night. Sale day dawned and all the stock were penned ready for sale.
Only 3 empty cows were sold in the cull ring and these grossed from £695 to £950 (143 to 159p per kg)
Weaned stores were offered next with steers making to £685 and heifers £635
The pedigree cows with calves started the herd offering and the 2 Bowtells 2007 born cows made £1350 and £1120 with calves and then among the 2005 homebred cows 3 made £1500 and £1550 and even among the older couples 4 more made £1500 to £1525. Pedigree in calf cows made to £1100 for Sanche Unique, born 2003.
The pick of the trade came in the purebred cows and calves which made to £2225 for a 2005 born cow with twins while younger cows due again in early spring were secured with bids of £1725, £1700, £1600 and 11 others made over £1500. Older couples in this section made £1080 to £1550. 9 Purebred in calf cows were offered and made £1,000 to £1250.
Finally the crossbred section for females produced another £200 plus call for a cow with twins – £2100 for a 2004 born Limousin cross cow while other couples topped at £1275and the in calf cows £1100.
Interest in the bulls was not as keen (typically for the autumn sales) with only 1 of the 6 definitely going to live at £1625 on a Colchester farm and the other 5 securing values at around their meat value (£1000 to £1350).
Averages – overall females 99 couples £1396 (with weaned calves included). 27 Pedigree cows and calves £1315 and 7 in calf cows £940; 33 Purebred cows and calves £1608 and in calf cows £1139; 9 Crossbred cows and calves £1167 and 6 in calf cows £967.50.

Myrtlegrove pedigree Sussex reduction sale – A morning start this week drew a good gathering of buyers and breeders to the sale ring for this pedigree sale. The instructions to sell this major herd reduction came from Myrtlegrove Farm Ltd (Ian Jenkins and Jill Angell) and with the Soil Associations permission to sell in a market as organic all potential buyers were able to bid for the cattle.
Cows and calves from the oldest pre 2000 born to 2nd calvers made to 1000gns twice and averaged £860; 2009 born heifers made to 750gns with 5 over 700gns and averaging £652 and the 2010 heifers averaged £481. Among the older cows a good selection of * (ie pure pure) cows were penned and with April or May born calves the 2 couples making 1000gns were Myrtlegrove Princess 7th and Myrtlegrove Princess 5th purchased by Earl De La Warr, Buckhurst Park and Farmers Direct, Alford, Surrey. Earl De La Warr purchased 2 other couples at 900gns namely Myrtlegrove Jewel 5th and Clementine 5th for 900gns while John How, Steyning bought Darkey 1st for 975gns and Darkey 8th at 960gns. The Snowdrop line stood out in the maiden heifers born in 2009 with 4 making 680gns, 710gns, 740gns and 690gns and 2 Bluebells made 700 and 75gns. 3 purchasers took these heifers, all to breed and the picture was similar for the younger run born in 2010.
