Finished Sheep

2109 Sold

Top price per kilo – 281p (twice) – D Isaac & T Husk; Top price per head – £121.50 – P & E Andreozzi

Report on trade:Another big entry of new season lambs this week with over 1,800 penned. With the hogget numbers decreasing rapidly the trade has remained at a constant to what we have been seeing for a few weeks. Lambs are currently about £5 to £7 up on the corresponding week in 2019 which, it is suggested, demonstrates a change in consumer habits during current social restrictions. Long may it last to reward all our vendors from across the South of England.

The best of the lambs this week were still making in excess of £100 to a top price of £121.50 which was part of a tremendous run of lambs form P & E Andreozzi, Petworth. Smart continental lambs this week were available in bigger numbers for the export customers with these best offerings making 270p per kg on many occasions from G H Dean & Co and both T Husk and and D Isaac hitting 281p.

An end of season entry of hoggets was on offer with every class and grade available from the best to the worst! Best hoggets without erupted teeth are still selling in excess of £90 and to a top price of £100 from J Bristow. Sheep with erupted teeth were making from £70 to £85.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could “help us to help you” by arriving earlier to assist with appropriate sorting and penning of sheep. Lairage facilities are available from 2 to 6pm every Monday and we can accept stock from 6am every Tuesday.

Sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Cull Cows and Bulls

Report on trade:

With the take-away sector now open and queues winding around towns with ‘drive- thru`s it is perhaps not surprising that demand for processing beef has reached new heights and we could not describe todays trade as anything other than sensational! A terrific entry of just short of 100 cows in June was not of outstanding quality but buyers were out in force to take all grades with confidence sky-high for feeders.

Only 12 animals made below 100p per kg and that included 3 Jerseys, 2 imported Holstein Friesian cows and a Belted Galloway bull! 27 cows were sold at 140p or above with 21 grossing over £1000.

Good beef meat cows made 140p to 165p and feeders made to 175p. Dairy culls with flesh and weight made 130p to 155p with the leaner cows from the parlour looking very well sold indeed. Bulls a little dearer selling to £1276.

Headlines included South Devon 164p, 162p, £1202, £1021 Gardners; Aberdeen Angus cross163p, 160p, 158p, 145p, 143p, £1120, £1088, £1006 B Sutton; Simmental cross162p £1027 Lawrence & Son and 151p £1174 Gardners; Charolais 159p, 154p, 140p £1052, £1021 R Stannard; Limousin cross 152p, 142p (Non FA) F W Hares & Son and 145p £1163 (Non FA) G Stokes; Blonde cross153p Mrs C Wimble and Sussex 147p £1128 K & P M Sinden & Sons.
