Weekly Sales News – 9 August 2016

A predictably quiet Tuesday and the sheep section makes the headlines with an improved trade to average 189.3p per kg for lambs and strong demand for grazing ewes within an entry of 864 penned. We will offer nearly 4,000 store lambs on Friday – watch out for the report early next week.

Top price per kilo – 226p – K Lukehurst: Top price per head – £97.50 – C D Millen
Report on trade: A good entry of lambs were on offer this week considering the ongoing harvest period but the strong level of trade we have seen certainly brought the numbers out with just over 2000 lambs penned. Numbers have been slipping downwards nationally over the past week which has in turn helped to push prices up by approx 7-8p per kg on the corresponding markets last week with the Ashford SQQ figure up by 8p on the week.
There were a large number of good quality lambs on offer this week right through the weights from 35kgs to 47kgs with the majority selling in excess of 200p to a top price of 226p form Mr K Lukehurst for 37kg Beltex lambs closely followed by Mrs C Worley at 218p and GH Dean and Co at 213p. Probably the lambs that were best sold on the day were the heavy sorts with 51kg lambs from CD Millen selling to £97.50 (191p), 47 Kg from A C Hulme & Sons to £95.50 (203p) and 46kgs from M Woodruffe to £95 (207p).

Cull Ewes
864 sold
Report on trade: A larger entry were penned this week as a result of a lot of lambs being weaned in the past few weeks. This means in turn a lot of ewes are being presented on the leaner side but these sorts look well sold to the grazing men who wish to secure some ewes to farm on and present later in the year when numbers drop.
Best ewes still sold in excess of £90 from G H Dean & Co and Mrs H V Link. Grazing sorts sold mainly from £40 to £60.
Finished Cattle
35 Sold
Sold by Richard Wood
Report on trade: Fewer cattle were offered this week, no doubt many vendors are busy with hay or wheat, but trade was no different with perhaps the top end gaining a few more coppers. Top price this week was S Marsh whose heavyweight Blonde heifers sold to 222p per kg and grossed £1107 at 11 mths, while top notch purebred Limousins from M B Farms sold to 218p and grossed £1595 at 29 mths. A run of indoor fed steers from A J Down sold to 184p and grossed to £1055 at 17 mths and the first draw of grazed steers from H G Tompsett & Sons were well received and sold to 200p.
A decent show of bulls were a fair trade but no better than expectations with Limousin x Friesians from T Castle & Son selling to 179p grossing £1140 at 19 mths and a suckled Limousin from M A Piper & Son Farms to 181p at 16 mths.
