Weekly Sales News – 6th March 2018

It a big thank you to the team here in the market for the hard work and effort that went into penning a near record entry of sheep (5563). The sheep trade is flying and it is smiles all round at the moment for market sellers.

It is the turn of the store cattle men next week – over 500 will be offered. Full auctioneers reports on sales for this week follow ….

Finished Sheep

3898 Sold

Top price per head – £136- D G & J W Gore; Top price per kilo – 268p – P Ashlee

Report on trade A big entry of sheep this week and as we have now said for three weeks running, what a fantastic trade but it keeps on improving! Just under 4000 finished hoggets penned and almost 6000 sheep penned in total which required a big effort from all involved and we would like to thank all the staff and the drovers in particular.

This was a flying trade throughout with an average price of 224p per kg returned all through with the overall price per head of all finished hoggets sold  £97.50 which must be a record for recent times. Demand for hoggets is insatiable and with all pens in the market full of sheep it is a pleasure to say that we could have sold more without any effect on the trade.

The roll of honours is long this week with huge numbers of sheep selling in excess of £100 with the biggest and best exceeding £120 on many occasions. Top prices included £136 from D G & J W Gore with the same vendor claiming second place also at £130 and closely followed by N & D Attwood at £126.50. These heavy sorts were very well sold on the day but possibly the dearest sheep were the 43-47kg weight bracket with these selling regularly in the range of 230-245p. The smartest continental sorts were in short supply this week with top spot in this department taken by P Ashlee with some very smart 38kg Beltex hoggets at £102.

Producers please note – For top results please present well fleshed lambs which are preferably dry and clean. Lairage facilities and dagging are available every Monday evening.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Cull Ewes and Rams

495 sold

Report on trade: A smaller entry of ewes on offer which in turn did push the prices upwards but this was certainly helped by the trade for all other sheep today. This was again a flying trade even though the ewe meat market is different to the lamb. Best ewes sold in excess of £100 with a top price from N C & C G Hedges of £110. Best meated sorts were best sold as is often the case with several pens of ewes made in excess of £80.

Top prices this week included continental Ewes to £110 form N C & C G Hedges, Suffolk crosses to £98.50 from P N & C Burden, Mules to £95 from Hall Place Farms and Romneys to £93 from A R Dunlop.

Store and breeding Sheep

1111 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Report on trade: we penned a big entry of stores again this week (over 1000) and once again the trade was on fire with only the very few long term and rare breed sheep selling below £65 and several genuine stores, that were going for further finishing, making in excess of £80 up to a top price of £89 from Martletts Farm. The trade is strong which shows faith in the sustainability of the current finished hogget trade.

A pen of ewe tegs sold to a top price of £88.50 from S W Curran. Averages 243 ewe tegs to £89 and aver £80.69; 868 stores to £87 and aver £69.48

General information

Farm Assurance

In the last few weeks it has become clear that some producers who in the past had land that was a ‘linked holding’ have not advised their certification body that these holdings – whether rented, grasskeep or owned – are listed as an additional unit on their Red Tractor membership.

Unless included traceability checks may question whether the location the animals have moved from to us or during the 60 or 90 day periods, is actually Farm Assured.

If you are unclear from your paperwork at home you should check with either the

Red Tractor Beef and Lamb service on 020 3617 3672

or your certification body:-
