New seasons lambs: Top price per kilo – 250p – Ms H V Link: Top price per head £110.50 – R A & W Brown

Report on trade: A similar sized entry of lambs to last week were penned with some super quality on offer which certainly boosted the trade. This coincided with the week where we saw the most firms fully switch to new season lambs for the majority of their kill as hoggets have finally dried up around the country. Despite this we still had 900 hoggets in the pens but nationally there were very few on offer.

The best quality certainly saw a real lift in demand this week and some prices were up by £5-10 on the week with several pens of the heavier types selling in excess of £100.  The podium of these top prices was filled with Sussex farmers, who travelled the distance and were rewarded with prices of £110.50 fo R A & W Brown , closely followed by T Masters at £109.50 and £107.50 from P & E Andreozzi. The trade for lighter export weight lambs improved also and these sold to 250p from Ms H V Link and closely followed by MB Farms at 242p.

Still 900 hoggets penned this week with everything on offer from both ends of the scale. Lean ones, thick ones, young ones and old ones (A bit like the Hobbs Parker team….!) Trade is still strong for the better end of the hoggets on offer provided they are meat and have not got erupted teeth.  Numbers in this department are expected to drop off very quickly now.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Report on trade: Despite major abattoirs reducing price and cancelling loads due to short term over supply, trade at Ashford Market is holding relatively well. Heavier sorts made 180p to 190p with notably a Blonde cross heifer to £1196 (186p) from G L Boulden & Sons and a Limousin cross steer £1118 (190p) from R F & E A Simmons.

Cull Cows and Bulls

58 Sold

Report on trade: Quite a contrast to last week with a good quality show of fleshed beef cows, in particular, with very few keeping beef types. A few well fleshed dairy culls but more leaner cows off grass straight out of the dairy.

Trade strong, particularly for the well fleshed beef cows, but deadweight trends are declining nationally as more culls come forward particularly in the dairy sector as the first flush of grass milk falls away.

Smart continental cross cows made 140-150p per kg and plenty more 120-140p. Best dairy culls 115-120p but the mid range as well sold as anything.

Headlines included Limousin cross 150p(2), 147p, 144p and £1129, £1121 W S Furnival (Brookland); British Blue cross 148p, 139p £1142 M B Farms and 134p, 130p £1010 W S Furnival (Brookland); South Devon 129p £982 Gardners; Sussex cross  125p £959 J Batchelor & Ptrs; Sussex 125p £890 Gardners, 122p, 118p, 117p £868 (Non FA) I Strang and 121p £886 Chandler & Dunn; Aberdeen Angus cross 123p £925 M A & F W Owen and Blonde cross 124p Gardners and 120p J Prior & Son.

In the dairy lines British Friesian 120p(2), 119p £902, £866 PHR Farms; Holstein Friesian OTM heifer 134p £1088 J Leggat & Son; Holstein Friesian cows 120p £884 J Leggat & Son, 117p £908 J Warnock & Son and 116p £959 D Murdoch & Sons; Brown Swiss 112p £886 D Murdoch & Sons and Jersey 85p, 83p £477 Hickson Bros.

Stock bulls saw Aberdeen Angus 113p £1213 and Sussex 103p £866.

A pen of 20 mths South Devon cross heifers topped the market at £840 from G Symons while yearling South Devon cross heifers sold well at £720 from G Huntley & Son.

Other cattle to sell well included hard done 12 mths Aberdeen Angus cross steers at £715 from S Lewis and yearling continental cross heifers at £775 from J Batchelor & Ptnrs, £755 from G Huntley & Son and £710 from Mrs E M West.
