Weekly Sales News – 4th April 2017

April is always a very busy month for livestock sales here in Ashford (2,500 cattle, 13,700 sheep and 400 pigs traded in the month in 2016) and our busy day yesterday continued this trend. The store cattle demand continues to make the headlines with 35 farmers selling 546 cattle. Read on for all our livestock sale reports ….

Finished Sheep

2110 Sold

Top price per kg – 211p – Mr J Matthews; Top price per head – £100 – C A Worley Farming Ltd

A smaller entry this week and a slightly more difficult trade for all grades of hoggets on offer. The trade nationally has taken a downward trend since the sale last week with the increased numbers being marketed across the major centres in main feeding areas of the country. 120,000 hoggets were marketed in total last week through live auction centres which was almost 30% higher than the previous week.

Top price for the best Beltex cross lambs went to Mr J Matthews at 211p per kg and this was closely followed by the same vendor at 209p. Heavier weight sheep on offer topped at £100 from C A Worley Farming Ltd for some heavy Beltex hoggs with crossbred heavies selling to £86 from M R Woodruffe.

We had a small offering of new season lambs in the pens this week from one vendor. J Farrants lambs sold to a top price per head of £100 and 254p per kg. There will be the Easter show and sale for the best pen of 5 or more lambs next week with trade expected to remain at these levels.

Producers please note – For top results please present well fleshed lambs which are preferably dry and clean. Lairage facilities are available every Monday evening.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Cull Cows

Cull Cows – 37 Sold

Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill 07795 200357

Report on trade: There is no stopping the cow trade which is struggling to find numbers nationally to satisfy processing demand. We had low numbers today which met an outstanding trade. Please keep looking for suitable candidates amongst your beef and dairy herds. Carrying non productive cows in any system is not the best policy and at the moment we have an exceptional cull trade to take advantage of.

An outstanding run of young fed cows (3 – 6yrs) from Burden Bros met a superb trade with Limousin to 162p per kg and grossing  £1106, Aberdeen Angus to 150p and £1020, South Devon to 150p and in total their 13 cows averaged 150p and £1022 per head. Others all very well sold with Aberdeen Angus to 148p A J Strand & Sons and Sussex to 156p Beaute Farms.

Dairy culls were also in short supply. Holstein Friesian 134p £1027 WF Farms; Brown Swiss 122p £923 D Murdoch & Sons and Dutch imports to 100p and £731.

Store Cattle

546 Sold

Report on trade: The largest entry of store cattle this season comprised a predominance of top quality single suckled continental cross beef bred yearlings. The numbers and quality of stores on offer proved a major attraction with several additional buyers from away in attendance competing well with the locals and regular buyers. The trade was brisk throughout with the majority of yearling steers making £900 to £1000 and heifers £700 to £900. A superb yearling Limousin cross heifer topped at £1102 from H J Emery & Son and a smart 15 mths Limousin cross heifer sold well at £1025 from L Smith. A few older stronger sorts were on offer with a 24 mths Limousin cross steer topping the market at £1200 from Hawkfibre Ltd.

A small selection of Aberdeen Angus cross stores were offered and well received with a superb run of Aberdeen Angus x British Blue yearlings from J Prior & Son selling exceptionally well with steers to £1100 and heifers to £885. A run of hard farmed Aberdeen Angus cross cattle from G C Kirby & Son attracted lots of interest with yearling steers up to £885.
