Sheep sales reports

Finished Sheep – 2,328 Sold

Auctioneers: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901 and John Rossiter 07557 392903

Top price per kilo – 233p – M B Farms: Top price per head – £105 – A E Rumens.

Report on trade: This week saw an improved trade for new season lambs with all buyers now active in this section. The sale produced an overall average of 200p per kg with big premiums available for the best lean continental crosses, notably 37kgs Texel crosses at £86.50 (234p) from Mr C Somerset, 42kgs Beltex crosses at £98 (233p) from M B Farms, and Texel crosses around 220p from the Link Family. Top heavyweights made £105 from Mr A E Rumens.

Another late season entry of hoggets were penned with several lean sorts on offer and also a good number of overage sheep in the entry. Best meated sorts were still in demand as their heavier carcasses are required for the catering trade and the new season lambs cannot quite fulfil these orders. Best hoggets made in excess of £90 to a top of £94 from Ashenden Farms.

Please keep in touch regarding trade and likely numbers over the coming weeks. Also, early arrival of lamb is much appreciated so as to ensure proper presentation prior to sale.

Cull Cows and Bulls – 64 Sold

Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill – 07795 200357

Report on trade: There was little impact on numbers from the bank holiday and we saw another tremendous trade for cows with numbers elsewhere in the country dramatically down. Once again, the combination of demand for slaughter stock and feeding cattle ensured maximum returns to producers. Farm Assurance is still a very important feature in the finished trade, so it is very good to see non-assured cows being sold in feeding condition to allow feeders and grazers the opportunity to hold for at least 90 days. The new TB zoning rules are having no impact on the current cow trade.

Quality was much more variable this week amongst the beef cows but there was no stopping the trade. Best young Limousins (non FABBL) made to 165p from S J M Evans; Blonde (non FA) 135p from G J Ostridge; Limousins again 134p A Boyd & Co and 130p Birt Bros; Simmental 128p (£975) from R Coleman & Sons and 127p (non FA) Gladwin Ptrs; British Blues made to 126p Birt Bros, 124p N A Husk and Charolais 125p, 122p (£1065) J Gunner; Aberdeen Angus 124p from C & J Georgetti & Sons and 120p, 119p and 118p A Price and Hereford 119p (2) J Hobden & Sons.

A short entry of dairy culls and very short of flesh but a good trade throughout and half meat Holsteins made 110-115p and looked well sold. Holsteins made to 118p (£958) from J Gormley and 115p from J Warnock & Son with Jerseys 86p and 85p from Hickson Bros.

Several 3-5 year old dairy bred beef steers which were farm assured, sold well at 120-135p.

Stock bulls remain positive with a Limousin at 109p.
