New seasons lambs: Top price per kilo – 236p – Link Bros: Top price per head £100 – Miss J & V Weeks

Report on trade: A good entry of over 1100 lambs penned this week and an improved trade was seen in comparison to last week with a shortage nationally on the day following a bank holiday weekend. This is always a tricky time of year in the prime sheep section with not quite enough lambs on offer to fully replace the hoggets but some abattoirs have switched over to spring lambs and some have yet to do so which creates an inconsistent trade for the different sorts on offer. The best continental lambs sold to a top price for £99 from T Masters who showed a superb run of continental cross lambs to average over £95.

Just over 1000 hoggets on offer with all shapes and sizes from the very best to the not so good and many overage sheep also. The trade also reflect this variation in the quality on offer with sheep selling all the way up to £103. Best sorts are still in demand with the catering industry needing to find the heavier carcasses which are not available in the new season lamb section.

Hogget numbers will certainly drop very quickly in the next couple of weeks with an increase in new season lamb numbers anticipated.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Cull Ewes and Rams

401 sold

Report on trade: A small entry of cull ewes this week with again a lacklustre trade for those on offer, with the Muslim fasting period still in force until next week taking an effect on the trade. We may see a lift in trade after this but this is not guaranteed, but what is in the sheep industry these days! Numbers on offer will always dictate the ewe price regardless of the time of year. Best ewes sold in excess of £80 to a top price of £86 from G Lawrence and Son closely followed by M Woodruffe and A J Thompson & Sons.

Top prices include Suffolk crosses to £86 from G Lawrence & Son, continental ewes to £75 from J Hobden, Romneys to £66 from M Elphick

Breeding Sheep

Report on trade: Just a few pens of ewes and lambs on offer this week with two small consignments from regular vendors. Some smart continental lambs were on offer sold to £55 per life from C Woodhead.

Cull Cows and Bulls

45 Sold

Report on trade: Reasonable numbers but certainly a much more mixed offering on show this week. Little real flesh on offer and a high proportion of plain and very old cows amongst the beef cows which are probably hitting the market late enough to see a strong turnaround in condition as we enter June.

Fed fleshed continental cows towards 140p with good natives 120-130p. Younger tidy grazers 120p+/- but older cows more generally 100p and some plain old characters 60-80p.

Limousin cross 138p £920 R F & E A Simmons; Sussex 129p, 127p, 123p(2), 120p(2) £962 J C & C Lewis; Simmental cross 125p (Non FA) G F Hawkins; Aberdeen Angus cross 118p(Non FA) G F Hawkins, 117p Dr S W Winchester.

A similar story in the dairy section with just a handful of meat cows and more mid season grass cows from the parlour.

Holstein Friesian 120p £1093 W S Furnival Ltd, 120p £955 WF Farms; British Friesian 120p £818 PHR Farms.

More overage dairy steers coming out of hiding place and some massive specimens on offer!! Holstein steers 5-7yo to 118p; Ayrshire steer 5yo 114p; Swedish Red steer 5yo 105p.

No smart continental bulls on offer. Heavyweights a little easier with Holstein to 90p £1217 and Aberdeen Angus to 84p £935.

Please do not hesitate to ring at anytime for marketing advice.

Store Cattle

51 Sold

Report on trade: A very mixed quality entry of store cattle met a varied trade with the younger sorts on offer looking relatively well sold. A pen of 24 mths Sussex heifers topped the market at £815 from M Gibb while other top prices included an18 mths Aberdeen Angus cross steer £800 from Dr S Winchester, an 18 mths Aberdeen Angus cross heifer £750 from P A Ibbott and smart yearling Limousin cross heifers at £705 from Evans & Mason.

Calves

58 Sold

Report on trade: A brisk trade for all types of calves topping at £355, all breeds and types well in demand on the day!

Despite the entry being predominantly dairy sired, a good handful of continental sired calves were forward. Bulls met an excellent trade topping at £355 for a British Blue from the Falconhurst Estate. A run of shapey Simmentals from Parrett & Son topped at £325 and Limousins from W S Furnival Ltd sold to £305. Continental heifers were well in demand too, Parrett & Son sold Simmental heifers to £295 and Squerryes Estate Dairy sold Limousins to £290.

Only a very small handful of native sired calves forward this week, all of which were bulls. A & W J Hitchcock topped the trade with an Aberdeen Angus to £265, Mrs T Higgins also deserves a mention for her Hereford which sold to £210.

37 Dairy bred calves sold today with a strong trade from start to finish. Trade topped at £135 for a Holstein heifer from Squerryes Estate Dairy. Oncoland Ltd sold strong Black and White bull calves to £120 (x2). Most dairy sired calves were sold in the £30-£70 region with only a small handful below this.

A small entry of good quality stirks from WS Furnival Ltd sold to £410 for two Aberdeen Angus Bulls. A British Blue bull sold for £350 and two Limousin Heifers made £330

Vendors: Please try to inform us of entries for the calf and stirk sale as early as possible to enable us to inform buyers of the expected entry. This allows both us and them to plan better for the days sale. Please do try to make every effort to register the sire of your native bred (principally Aberdeen Angus and Hereford cross) calves. Calves that do not have registered sires are at a disadvantage when offered for sale!

We remind all calf sellers and buyers of the information below

Calf sellers and buyers should be aware that welfare regulations state that while an animal can be sold at 7 days old if they are offered at under 10 days old they cannot be transported more than 100km from the market. Buyers are notified from the rostrum when these calves are offered.

From a sellers view it is best not to present calves at under 10 days old to avoid possibly restricting the number of potential bidders for your stock.

Store and Finished Pigs

117 Sold

Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill 07795 200357

Report on trade: A big show of sows and heavy maiden gilts met another strong trade with buyers looking for heavyweight export carcases. Best of the heavy sows 250kg+ 70-75p, with the lighter sows and older more wasteful 60-65p. Best sows grossing £200.

Not a particularly polished show of store pigs and buyers stayed with hands in pockets!

Not much wrong with the finished pig trade at present with the disease issues of the Far East having a positive influence on world pig prices. Nothing exceptional amongst the entry but generally well fleshed pigs forward which found good competition. Poor pigs remain a difficult trade. S Scott & Son 123p £114; S Evans 116p £104; C B Hope 100-108p £100; G Tomsett 101-105p £107.

We remind all pig farmers of the information below

Identification of pigs – again we draw your attention to the fact that it is essential all pigs have permanent identification when offered for sale in a market i.e. slap mark or ear tag. Please ensure you comply with this regulation.
