Finished Sheep

Report on trade: Another small entry of sheep on offer today, usual for the time of year and sellers not encouraged by the anticipated trade although once again the figures on Monday were considerably less favourable than what was seen with us on Ashford on Tuesday. Mondays UK average was returned at 163p with the overall average in Ashford of 172p.

The best end of the lambs did struggle this week to break the 200p per kg mark however we did it just the once with some super lambs from P & A Love at 38kgs making £76. Heavier lambs would have sold on a comparable trade to last week with the best lambs making £85 to £90 and to a top price of £89.50 from Link Bros.

Producers please note – For top results please present well fleshed lambs which are preferably dry and clean. Lairage facilities are available every Monday evening.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Cull Ewes and Rams

798 sold

Report on trade: Another big entry of ewes with a large percentage of leaner sorts on offer once again but these grazing types were certainly easier to buy this week with several buyers now full up after purchasing in the past few weeks. Meat ewes were also slightly easier with the best of these selling to £85 from Mrs K Butcher.

Top prices included crossbred ewes to £95 from Mrs K Butcher, Suffolk crosses to £80 from J Farrant and Romneys to £65 from G & H Bates.

Finished Cattle – 55 Sold

Auctioneer: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901

Report on trade: Another strong trade despite some of the major abattoirs trying to pull the price back a fraction compared to recent weeks. Quite simply there were not enough cattle on offer for the buyers in attendance and competition was fierce throughout.

Best beef bred sorts took the pick of the trade with a run of continental cross heifers selling exceptionally well at £1252 (232p), £1349 (224p) and £1357 (213p) from W S Furnival (Brookland) and smart Limousin cross steers at £1218 (220p) and £1315 (206p) from W Alexander (Shoreham). Other top prices included a Limousin cross steer at £1255 (217p) from H G Tompsett & Son Ltd, Simmental cross heifer at £1241 (211p) from A J Thompson & Sons and a weekly consignment of continental x Friesian steers to £1131 (210p) from A J Down.

A run of Friesian steers look well sold up to £1021 (152p) from E T Ledger & Son Ltd.

Support the live market and compare deadweight returns. Buyers are in attendance every  for all qualities of finished cattle and specialist feeders competing well for cattle to feed

Cull Cows

68 Sold

Report on trade: A good show of cows with a bit more flesh on offer in general met a decent trade despite a generally easing national seasonal trend. Flesh and farm assurance certainly helping factors but with the processing market widely spread plenty of customers are able to handle the non assured both to feed and to slaughter. Confidence in the sector remains positive with so little product in store and so little coming from the prime beef sector.

Best of the fleshed crossbred beef cows still able to touch 150p per kg with plenty 130-140p and up over £1000. Good feeders wanted but the older plain cows a little steadier at 80-100p. those sold included Stabiliser cross 150p, 145p, 140p and  £922 (Non FA) from A & N Bullen; Sussex 148p, 139p £878 Chandler & Dunn; Sussex cross 141p,138p, 137p £1048 E Chantler & Sons and 138p (Non FA) A & N Bullen; British Blue cross 142p Langrish Farmers; Aberdeen Angus cross 138p £1121 E Chantler & Sons and 128p £1052 (NonFA) P M Thomas; Limousin cross 138p, 135p E Chantler & Son and 135p £953 Dan Mackelden Ltd; Simmental cross 138p M J Booth, 131p(2) and 130p, £1010(Non FA) G Hosmer & Son and Charolais x 130p £895 (Non FA) R Murtagh.

A short entry of dairy culls this week and rates very similar with fleshed cows holding strong but more weakness in the demand for plain lighter weight carcases.

Holstein cows 137p £1091 J E Scutt & Sons, 134p £1160 N J & G M Lambert and 126p £904 J W Boyd & Sons; Dairy Shorthorn 133p £958 and British Friesian 131p £900 R L W Parrett.

Overage Holstein steers 140p, 135p, 133p, 132p £1019 and an Ayrshire 136p £1023 E T Ledger & Son.

Stock bulls similar with lean bulls under 100p, better fleshed a bit over.

Calves

118 Sold

Report on trade: Another entry of over 100 in the pens and this week the entry was generally younger calves with pressure on the calve pens at home on many farms as autumn calving really kicks in. One or two less buyers were on hand this week and trade generally easier for most grades compared with recent sales.

Headlines were made by A & W J Hitchcocks Aberdeen Angus cross bulls to £210 and heifers £205 (July and August born), British Blue bulls to £290 and heifers £235 (August born) from J Warnock & Son, Limousin bulls to £300 (June born) from Squeryes Estate Dairy Ptnrs, British Blue bulls to £270 and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £210 (Jluy and August born0 from H O Champneys Ltd, M W Goddards Holstein bulls (July born) to £110, British Blue bulls to £375 and Aberdeen Angus bulls to £235 (August and September born) from W S Furnival Ltd and an April born Hereford cross heifer (April born) £320 from M Gammons

Please keep your entries of calves coming – we have customers for all classes . At our fortnightly sales we expect to have plenty of enquiries for all shapes, sizes and ages of stock. Thank you all for texts and messages with early notice of your entries for forthcoming sales – it does help.

Store and Finished Pigs

95 Sold

Auctioneers: Peter Kingwill 07795 200357 and Mark Cleverdon

Report on trade: A better show of pigs, more individuals present to buy pigs but still not a very good story to report with all grades very difficult. Better 75kg-85kg pigs could just about reach 100p per kg but plenty of tidy pigs 80-90p and looking a good buy. Poor conformation or over fat types remain very difficult indeed.

Despite exchange advantages cheap European pig meat is hitting the trade hard. No good for producers anywhere, either side of the Channel!3

Store pigs sold well dispite the drop in the finished pens with P & R Marshalls young feeders making to £59.

General information

Notice from Trading Standards on Cull ewes and Sheep tags

Cull ewes – It is the time of the year that we will see large numbers of fleshy weaned cull ewes in lean condition. There is strong enquiry from grazing buyers looking for this kind of stock.

We respectively remind vendors that these ewes must be in appropriate condition to both travel and to be shown in the market.

Sheep producers are reminded that all sheep now require electronic tags, either single, double or re replacements. Please refer to Defra guidelines for the necessary type of tag required depending on the sheep you are presenting for sale.
