Weekly Sales News – 26 July 2016

Leave blank

This was a short week for stock coming forward with plenty of alternative work at the forefront of farm schedules. Trade is holding up well for the stock offered with lambs still well above last years levels week on week and cattle returns holding at recent improved levels.

Store cattle are expected again next week with over 150 head promised and strong demand expected for cattle to feed and graze. Catalogues are available online and in printed copy.

Finished Sheep

1,766 Sold

Top price per kilo – 216p – Mrs C Worley: Top price per head – £94.80 – A C Hulme & Sons

Report on trade: A smaller entry of lambs in the pens this week sold to a similar trade to last week. Smaller numbers have been coming forward nationally over the past 7 days with many producers very busy on farm with the onset of the 2016 harvest period which in turn has helped the trade to maintain its current level which sits at approximately 35p per kg above the corresponding period in 2015. The best end of the continental export grade lambs sold in excess of £2 per kg to a top price of 216p from Mrs C Worley and 203p from G H Dean & Co with heavy weights up to £94.80 from A C Hulme & Sons and £94 from W T Kemp.

We would draw producers attention to the fact that a few lame sheep have been consigned to the market in recent weeks which have come to the attention of Trading Standards Officers.  All animals must be able to support weight on all four feet to be deemed fit for market and to travel.

Cull Cows

51 Sold

Report on trade: This was again a very decent entry considering that it was an out and out haymaking day across the country! Quality was certainly more variable overall with many more dairy culls on offer. Trade remains very strong particularly for the fleshed cows with the leaner dairy culls just a shade steadier.

No the very best beef cows on offer this week but good fleshed crossbred beef cows, if assured, regularly made 115p – 135p per kg. These included Simmentals at 138p and 137p and grossing £1107 from Freshfield Farms and 122p R L W Parrett; Charolais 122p Freshfield Farms, Aberdeen Angus 119p and and MRI 118p.

Flesh was wanted amongst the dairy culls with the best up over 120p. These included Holstein Friesians to 124p and 118p  and £1105 from M W Goddard, 118p and £928 R Torrance & Son, 116p Hall Place Farms, 115p and £916 J E Scutt & Sons; British Friesians 122p(2) and £860 and  121p and 120p; Norwegian Reds 113p and Jerseys 81p, 79p(2) and 78p.

A Limousin stock bull grossed £1050 (106p).
