Sheep sales reports

Finished Sheep – 2,989 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Top price per head – £100 – N & D Attwood : Top price per kilo – 232p – J A Cox.

Report on trade: Another good sized entry was penned today with just under 3,000 finished hoggets forward. Another slight move in the Sterling/Euro exchange rate has helped the export trade, which in turn has pushed live-weight prices upwards once more.

Several impressive runs of sheep were penned, and the overnight lairaged sheep that were presented empty and dry sold to a noticeable premium. Runs of continental hoggets from H Rivers,  P & C Bower Ptnrs and P Ashlee all averaged in excess of 200p and the top price for export grade hoggets was 232p for some superb 38kg Beltex (£88) from J A Cox.

Heavy hoggets sold to £100 from N & D Attwood, £96 from P & C Bowers Ptnrs and £95 from H & N Nesfield. The Ashford overall SQQ average was 191p.

Cull Ewes and Rams – 654 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Report on trade: Another strong ewe trade today, despite a few more ewes in the pens with over 650 forward. Overall average was returned at a very strong £74. The top spot went, as in the hogget section, to some fantastic Beltex ewes from J A Cox selling to £124 and several ewes made in the region of £90. Numbers appear to have tightened up nationally, presumably as a result of the end of scanned empty ewes coming forward, which has in turn helped prices to improve.

Top prices on the day included Beltex to £124 from J A Cox, Charollais to £109 from D & O Bond, Suffolk crosses to £98 from C & J Georgetti & Sons, Mules to £79.50 from M Gammons and Romneys to £86 from J Paine Farms.

Cull Cows and Bulls – 72 Sold

Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill 07795 200357

Report on trade: Cull cows were dearer throughout as the weakening Pound continues to assist our exporters and hinder the importers. There is no sign of any rise in numbers from the dairy sector but maybe this will come a little later prior to turnout. Confidence is high amongst the feeders too and there is no doubt this is the time to clear up empty lean beef cows. Non assured holdings are certainly better to be selling as feeders and allowing the fattener the qualifying residency time to ensure maximum returns.

Fleshed beef cows made 120-140p per kg and a few good feeders pushed close to 150p. A Blonde made 139p (£1004)  from A J Thompson & Sons; Limousin 138p from L E Humphreys & Sons; Simmental 122p (£954) and Charolais 120p (£1040) from Llewellyn Farms; a Limousin feeder 147p from P N & C Burden; Charolais feeders 142p, 140p, 135p (2) and 127p Foyle Farmers; Aberdeen Angus feeders 130p and128p from H T & H R Head; South Devon 125p P N & C Burden and a Sussex 123p from I G Pilcher.

There was not much flesh on offer amongst the black and whites and the best cull certainly, a Dutch import at 101p reflecting the continued idiocy of the Red Tractor protocol over residency – surely they want to be helping farmers returns not driving them down. All cows were dearer this week but the very plain will continue to remain difficult to all. Holsteins made to 112p (£937) from J Skinner; 112p J Gormley; 108p J Warnock and Son; Dairy Shorthorns 109p (£700) Chichester College and Jerseys 79p (£450) from Hickson Bros.
