Weekly Sales News – 22nd November 2016
Week on week we report and better finished sheep trade, stand on cattle trade, very strong good quality pig trade and another 343 store and breeding cattle traded with demand still strong for these. Read on below for full details … Remember it is Christmas show week next Monday and Tuesday.
Finished Sheep
969 Sold
Top price per kilo – 204p – N Balcomb & Son: Top price per head – £93.50 – Mrs J Walker
Report on trade: A quality entry of lambs were penned this week with more meat and less leaner sorts on offer than last week with the overall average returned over 12p per kg ahead of our figures for last week. Numbers on offer across the country on Monday were down by 17% on last week and therefore it was a case of short supply and strong demand helping us on Tuesday.
All grades of lamb were in demand this week with the best continental export grade lambs selling to 204p per kg for 39kg lambs from N Balcomb & Son. The heavy weight lambs were also very well sold to a top price of £93.50 from Mrs J Walker for some smart 53kg lambs.
We would again strongly advise that sheep vendors obtain farm assurance status on their stock as some buyers are now restricted to only purchasing lambs with this certification.
Important Notice – next week is Christmas show here and with a slight change to sale times we will sell the commercial finished lambs at 09.30am followed by the sale of show lambs.
It would be much appreciated if vendors could let us know what lambs they will be sending and attempt to get them to the market as early as possible.

Cull Cows

Cull Cows – 81 Sold
Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill 07795 200357
Report on trade: We can report an improved trade for the cows overall though it has to be noted that it is the best that are getting dearer and the very worst that are getting less. Competition and demand is stronger for processing beef but we had too many cows carrying weight but no flesh. Trade for anything with meat, whether farm assured or not, was certainly firmer and we will see this trend accentuated after the Christmas primal work has passed through and retailers concentrate on New Year marketing.
A few very best beef cows made around 130p per kg but generally 100-115p if assured, and maybe 15-20p less if not. Farm assurance status is not however affecting the younger feeding types which remain in strong demand for new year finishing. Charolais made 147p,131p and 128p and grossed to £1157 from J Boomaars; Limousin cross 131p and 130p A J Bray; 129p E Chantler & Son and 115p Bob Luck Ltd; Simmental (Non FA) 111p D Lazell; Sussex (Non FA) 110p (twice) and 105p Mrs B Spratt and fleshed, exempt, and non FA 107p, 105p and £815 fro0m C Hinde & Son.
Dairy culls firmer but with little real meat on offer and a few better types over made 100p but plenty 70-100p and the plain cows 40-60p and some less depending on weight. Holsteins made to 108p and grossed £769 from J E Scutt & Sons.
