Sheep sales reports

Finished Sheep – 3,159 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Hoggets. Top price per head –  £93 Mr M Jilks and Mr P Cruise: Top price per kilo –  203p Mr H Rivers

Report on trade: A slightly larger entry of hoggets were forward today but with the imminent short week upon us for Easter the trade has taken a slight dip from last weeks highs. The recent lift was certainly helped by a demand for Easter lamb in the supermarkets but this week many of these orders have been filled and time is tight to get it to the shelves for the weekend. Our overall average was only 6p per kg lower than last weeks figure and many of the best meated export grade sheep sold again in excess of 200p. Farm assured sheep were sold to a noticeable premium with a difference of around 6p between the assured and non assured sheep as many of the export orders now require farm assured stock .

Export grade Charolais cross hoggets form H Rivers sold to £89.50 for 44kg with heavyweights making to a top of £93 from M Jilks and P Cruise. Another consignment of note was a fantastic run of 120 heavy hoggets from L J & P J Bolton which all sold in excess of £90.

Milk lambs. An early season entry of 83 spring lambs was sold to average 215p for the Easter market. With Easter being early this year we saw many pre Christmas born lambs on offer in the entry.

Lambs sold to a top price of 230p from Mrs V McDonald (40kgs @ £92) closely followed by Mr J Howie at 228p (37kgs @ £84.50).

Cull Ewes and Rams – 636 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Report on trade: A larger entry sold today to a slightly better trade but it must be said that there were more first quality fleshed ewes in the entry. Overall a similar trade to last week.

Again the supply has been limited across the country due to the lambing season being in full swing now and this is in turn holding prices up at a constant level. Best ewes made to £100 from L J & P J Bolton closely followed by P & C Burden at £97.50.

Top Prices on the day included Suffolk crosses to £100 from L J & P J Bolton, continental ewes to £90.50 from H Rivers, Mules to £83.50 form L J & P J Bolton and Romneys to £85.50 from Langrish Farmers.

Store and Breeding Sheep – 680 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Report on trade: There were less stores on offer today and the edge was certainly off the trade with fewer buyers coming forward at this stage to buy stores this season. The best still made in excess of £70 to a top of £71 from CW Barnes and HF Brown and Sons.

Suffolk x Mule ewe tegs from J & M Carr made to £80 and the first ewes and lambs offered this season were a pen of Romneys with twins lambs making £124 (£41.33 per life). Averages 557 Store tegs to £71.50 av £51.32; 109 Suffolk x Mule ewe tegs to £80 av £74.77

Sock Lambs – 85 Sold

Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688

Report on trade: The first large entry of the season found buyers for all with competitive bidding throughout the sale. Best lambs made £20 and over (16 of) with middling sorts £10 to £20 and only 13 under £10. Averages £28 to £3 Av £14.90.

Vendors please note – please ensure when bringing lambs to market your stock are all fit and healthy with dry navels.

Cattle sales reports

Finished Cattle – 41 Sold Auctioneer: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901

Report on trade: The changes in abattoir grading and payments for heavier cattle are certainly taking its toll on the finished cattle trade. This coupled with the short week for Easter and the general slow down in sales led to very difficult trading conditions this week. Hopefully the easing of numbers over the country as turnout approaches will lead to a lift in prices and confidence.

Top price of the day was 210p per kg for a very smart handy weight steer from G L Boulden & Son and with good butchers cattle from W Alexander (Shoreham) Ltd and D W Page & Son making from 180 to193p. A J Downs continental x Friesian cattle made from 174 to177p and Mr K Budd’s older British Blue x Friesian steers 160 to 168p with a top gross of £1123.

Cull Cows and Bulls – 62 Sold

Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill – 07795 200357

Report on trade: We saw a better trade for the cows this week with more beef cows and less dairy culls within the entry. Feeders are holding strong and cow meat has to remain competitive in an arena where prime forequarter rates are falling sharply, so little sign of any major turn. Numbers however will tighten further upon turn out and this might give some comfort.

Fleshed beef cows, if assured, made 110 – 125p per kg and most of the feeders 115 – 145p. Aberdeen Angus made to 143p from Garuara Estates; Limousin 131p and 126p from S J M Evans; Charolais 125p (£934) A J Thompson & Sons; British Blue 117p and Simmental 116p Garuara Estates.

There was more demand for the dairy culls though we were short of flesh. Holstein Friesians 109p D Murdoch & Son; Dairy Shorthorn 116p Chichester College; Brown Swiss 98p D Murdoch; Guernsey 96p (£793) W G & T A Manford; Ayrshire 95p Chichester College; Jersey 75p Hickson Bros.

Store Cattle – 313 Sold

Auctioneer: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901

Report on trade: Still plenty of buyers round the ring but the buyers are being selective and want young cattle well grown but not overly heavy.

Young cattle started off with a bright trade. P Courts May born British Blue cross steers made to £548 and A & N Bullens May and June born Stabalizer cross steers to £760. The yearlings were also sought after with B J & E L Bellhouse’s run of Simmental x Sussex steers making to £832. CTS Farms Limousin x Sussex steers made to £850 and Beaute Farms Limousin and Blonde x Sussex to £830. Messrs Gardners had the pick of the trade with their March born Limousin cross steers out of continental cows making to £930. The trade for heifer yearlings was also very competitive with K I Lingham & Son Limousin cross heifers making to £810 and R Coleman & Sons to £700.

Older heavier cattle look value compared to the yearlings with even the heaviest 600kg plus cattle struggling to get to £1000. Native breed cattle were selling well with Sussex steers from B W Kemsley & Son making to £780 and Boyes and New’s Aberdeen Angus cross steers making to £748.

New TB movement rules as from 6th April 2016

DEFRA are introducing a Post-Movement Testing policy for cattle moving into any Low Risk Area from herds located in High Risk Areas, Edge Areas and Wales.

Low Risk Areas – where routine surveillance takes place every 4 years – Kent, West Sussex, Surrey, Essex, Greater London, Hertfordshire and Eastern Counties.

Edge Areas – Parts of East Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

High Risk Areas – Parts of East Sussex, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, and all Western Counties.

Bovines moving from High or Edge Areas to Low Risk Areas must be post-movement tested between 60-120 days of joining the new herd.

Animals will not be allowed to move off their destination holding until they have completed a negative post-movement test, unless the movement is directly to slaughter or to a licensed or approved finishing unit.

Hobbs Parker Auctioneers will identify in their catalogues and at the point of sale the status of the area from which cattle have been consigned.

All cattle of all ages are involved and young calves, whether pre-movement tested or not due to age, will require to be post-movement tested between 60-120 days.  Costs of testing are the responsibility of the purchaser, though if a routine DEFRA surveillance test is due then this can be utilised.

Only cattle from the High and Edge Areas moved to Low Risk Areas will be required to be tested.  This, in no way, affects other cattle on the destination holding.

Holdings on an annual testing routine in Low Risk Areas do not require stock to be post-movement tested following a sale/movement.

Failure to complete a post-movement test in the 60-120 day period will constitute an offence under the Animal Health Act and would result in a herd closure restriction.

If vendors or purchasers have any questions concerning the above please do not hesitate to contact our Market Office.
