Cattle sales reports
Finished Cattle – 67 Sold
Auctioneer: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901
Report on trade: A similar trade for the commercial continental bred cattle and a very good trade for a few exceptional shaped cattle. The native bred cattle in particular were a very strong trade. M B Farms topped both steers and heifers with cattle making an excess of 220p per kg and D W Ferguson Ltd and W S Furnival (Brookland) Ltd) also had cattle making over 200p. Priors Byne Farm Sussex cattle were strongly competed over and made upto 184p and D J Martin and Miss I Dinnis saw there Sussex and Sussex crosses made to 178p.

Cull Cows and Bulls – 77 Sold
Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill – 07795 200357
Report on trade: Good numbers are still coming forward and they met another very strong trade. Quality was much more variable this week with a shortage of the smart feeding types and not much flesh on offer in the beef sector. Rates very similar to recent weeks but we all await the referendum result to see the impact on exchange rates. Currently a relatively weak Pound is helping our exports and hindering the imports.
Limousins made to 141p per kg and £969 for Freshfields Farms, 132p and £947 for J Batchelor & Ptnrs; South Devons 136p and 130p G Symons and 122p W E Baines; Simmental 127p D J Cornforth; British Blue 127p F Henderson and Sussex 120p,118p and £753 D J Miles (Exempt).
British Friesians amde 116p, 115p(3), 113p(2) from Debden Court; Holstein Friesian 117p, 114p from J Skinner, 116p, 115p W F Farms; 116p W S Furnival; and foreign bred Holsteins 90p, 88p, 86p. Jerseys made 86p and 80p Hickson Bros.
Good bulls are wanted and Limousins made 128p,124p and to £1246.

Store Cattle – 118 Sold
Auctioneer: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901
Report on trade: The store cattle sale kicked off sharply with two good shaped Limousin cross 7 mth old bulls from A Boyd & Co making £790. This set a trend for the sale with only the long term TB Edge cattle being harder to sell, with the 60 to 120 day testing period falling now in the middle of harvest these are not proving popular with buyers from low risk areas. Barfrestone Courts yearling British Blue steers made up £730 and heifers to £700. Their Aberdeen Angus cross steers at 9-12 mths also made to £700. J Swift made up to £788 for his 15 mth old Limousin and British Blue crosses, A Boyd & Co had a 21 mth Limousin steer which made £1075 and A J Down had a pen of Hereford x Friesian steers in forward condition which made £1020 at 14 mths.
This was a good trade overall with plentiful supplies of grass helping the situation.
Other stock sales reports
Calves – 60 Sold
Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688
Report on trade: Still a smaller than expected entry, even for June, but regular buyers were on hand and competed well to secure stock right through to the lesser end of the runs of black and white bull calves. The dairy bulls made up 66% of the entry and again the beef crosses sold exceptionally well.
Young beef crosses made to £275 for British Blue heifers and £260 for bulls from J W Boyd & Sons while stronger British Blues made to £385 for both bulls and heifers from M W Goddard. Native breeds were led by Goddard & Son with their Aberdeen Angus bulls making £300 and £260 and heifers £220. A West Sussex farm consigned Blonde heifers to make £250 and Limousin heifers £280.
Reared black and white bulls made to £175 from D Murdoch & Sons and £170 from M W Goddard with young models to £110 from Ledger Farms. The majority of the rest made £30 to £100 whikle reared (November 2011 born) Ayrshire bulls made to £235 from J Howie
Please keep your entries of calves coming. At our fortnightly sales we expect to have plenty of enquiries for all shapes, sizes and ages of stock. Thank you all for texts and messages with early notice of your entries for forthcoming sales – it does help.

Store and Finished Pigs – 174 Sold
Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688
Report on trade: Quality was not to the fore this week in the finished pens but those on offer made similar prices to recent sales and in total a good number were sold again. Cull numbers increased and stores were fewer this week. Nationally the deadweight returns have now caught up with the markets which is good news for the industry as a whole.
The best finished pigs made to 101p per kg for a single light pig from A C Ellett and a pen from C B Hope with the best pigs (33 of the entry) grossing £85 to £98. C B Hopes run of 38 averaged £85.32. The remainder of varied quality made principally 30 to 80p.
Cull sows and boars made 18 to 38p with the best with weight 35p plus. A heavy boar grossed £84.
In the store pig pens well bred light fedders made £40 to £42 from P & R Marshall and others £5 to £12.
Our pig sales are held once a fortnight and with spring and summer on the way we all hope the trade and confidence in the pig sector will rise again (from the very low levels prevailing for about 3 months on more now!). Please keep in touch with us here in Ashford if you have pigs to sell.
