We can however report a strong trade throughout the entry with competition for each grade of lambs on offer. Export grade lambs topped at 221p per kg from R J & E F B Russell for some very smart 36kg Beltex lambs and some heavier sorts from L Stevens & Sons to 210p for 43kg lambs. Cull Cows

73 Sold

Report on trade: The cow trade was much improved on the week with more customers around the ring and determination amongst the feeding men and slaughterhouses to secure numbers. Prospects look good in this sector with the imported material finding itself at a disadvantage. Lean old cows do find it hard going but it is the back end and there will be more to come.

Good beef cows made 125-150p per kg, with assurance making some 10-15p difference to the fleshed types. Feeders were all very dear and young cows under 4 yrs very keenly soughtafter . TB status is of no issue at all as stock will generally be finished well within the 120 days.

Simmentals made to 154p and £1005 (Non FA) from D E Jenkins; Herefords 161p and Sussex 148p and 142p Bowes Lyon Estate; South Devon 138p and 124p £976 H & S Nesfield; Aberdeen Angus 131p, 128p £886 C R Cook; Sussex 130p Miss E Wood; Sussex 129p, 127p £999 C E & W S Millson and Limousin 125p D J Miles and 124p F W Hare & Sons.

We were short of flesh again amongst the dairy culls where British Friesians made 128p(2), 124p, 121p(2) from  Debden Court Farms and Holstein Friesians 120p £972 R C & J L Pickering. Good meat cows made 110p plus; steakers 90-110p; boners 70-90p and plain, particularly if lightweights 40-60p. Good trade for the season.

There was strong demand for the overage (3 yrs plus) cattle with Holstein steers 134p (£1115), 131p, 130p, 128p(2) etc. from E T Ledger & Son.

Store Cattle – 619 Sold

Auctioneer: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901

Report on trade: This was a particularily large entry of store cattle for September, with several producers selling earlier than usual due to the tightening keep situation. All sellers were well rewarded with competitive prices throughout with the ringside packed with potential buyers attracted by the numbers and quality of stock on offer.

The majority of youngsters made £400 to £600 and the best of the 12-15 mths stores £800 to £1000 with strong stores with frame to finish short term making over £1000. The beef bred Continental crosses took the pick of the prices while the native breeds are attracting the usual keen interest from finishers aiming their cattle at the various specialist schemes.
