Sheep sales reports
Finished Sheep – 2,993 Sold
Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903
Top price per kilo – 239p – Mr D Isaac: top price per head – £94 – L Stevens & Sons.
Report on trade: This was a disappointing trade for a large entry of new season lambs with overall averages dropping by some 25p per kg in a week and now on a par with prices achieved at the same time last year. The large number of hoggets still available obviously does not help and this will change quickly over the next few weeks. The lamb trade going forward will be very much influenced by the speed at which they finish and come forward for sale.
Overall average today was 194.3p with big premium available for the smart lightweight lambs with 35kg Beltex crosses topping the market at £83.50 (238.6p) from Mr D Isaac. A quality run from T Masters took the pick of the medium weight trade averaging £85.62 and some superb heavyweights grossing up to £94 from L Stevens & Sons.
We had a smaller entry this week in the pens as the end of the hogget finishing season draws to a close with a lot of sheep in the pens with erupted teeth. With over 1,300 new season lambs in the pens being sold on a easier trade, we saw a small dip in the hogget prices from last weeks levels. We had generally less meated sorts in the pens and the best were sold at a distinct premium grossing in excess of £100 from Ashenden Farms. Lighter weight export grade sold in the region of 175p-190p.

Cull Ewes and Rams – 359 Sold
Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903
Report on trade: A smaller entry this week and a different trade too with averages up by over £10. Wholesale demand has picked up once again and the smaller number of ewes on offer pushed prices back up to the levels we have been seeing over recent weeks.
Top prices on the day included Suffolk crosses to £93.50 from N & C Hedges, Mules to £76 from P R & H R Vellacott and Romneys to £80 from L F Crisford & Sons.
Store and Breeding Sheep – 1,417 Sold
Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903
Report on trade: One of the largest entries of breeding sheep we have seen on a Tuesday for many years saw almost 1500 sheep in the pens including almost 800 ewe tegs and large consignments of ewes with lambs at foot. A large crowd from all over the South East were in attendance and there were several bidders on each and every pen with the recent good grass growing conditions helping fuel the buyers enthusiasm.
Ewes and lambs sold from £45-57 per life depending on the ages of the ewes on offer. M Banham topped at £57 per life for some Suffolk cross 1 lamb ewes with Charollais cross lambs at foot. Romney ewes from G & H Bates sold to £51 per life with lambs at foot and a large run of sheep from T M Beesley were shown very well in the pens with strong healthy lambs that sold to average around £50 per life.
Ewe tegs were in demand with some tremendous pure Texels from M D & T Healy selling to £156. Top spot in the Suffolk x Mule section was £100 shared by Summerdown Farm and M Gammons while Mules from M Gammons sold to £97 and Romneys topped at £97 from H F Brown & Sons.
A handful of young rams were offered as a late entry from Rusper Farm. These Texels made to £195 and Charolais to £150.

Cull Cows and Bulls – 57 Sold
Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill – 07795 200357
Report on trade: Cows are a real trade at the moment and producers with slaughter or feeding cattle really ought to be taking advantage over the coming weeks. Numbers were for the time of year with supplies nationally tight. A real mixture of qualities today but all very well sold.
Best beef meat cows made 130-150p per kg with no real smart feeders on offer. Commercial meat cows were dearer at 110-130p with more cows up over £1000 again. Older feeders also remain a very firm trade with grass in abundance.
Limousin 148p and 142p (£1010) from L E Humphreys & Sons, 141p (£1019) M B Farms and 129p E Chantler & Sons; Simmental 128p E Chantler & Sons; Hereford 129p (£1112), British Blue 128p and Red Poll 127p(2) (£848) from A & R Martin; South Devon 127p and 124p (£963) Frederick & Sons and a Sussex 116p (Non Farm assured) A H Hoad & Son.
We were short of best cows this week amongst the dairy culls. Young Holstein slips made 134p, 128p and 121p (£851) from A J Thompson & Sons; Holstein Friesian 126p (£929) Huddlestone Farmers and medium cows were very dear.
Stock bulls improved with a Limousin grossing to £1097 and Sussex £908.

Heathfield Show news – the show society have issed the following press release
“Heathfield Show – Saturday 28th May at Little Tottingworth Farm, Broad Oak, Heathfield, East Sussex.
The High Weald’s Shop Window
People driving past the fields of Little Tottingworth Farm in Broad Oak, Heathfield over the weekend will have noticed teams of people measuring out the field. This was the beginning of two weeks preparations for the Heathfield & District Agricultural Show.
David Unsworth White, our Ground Contractor, is responsible for directing the team of volunteers who are happy to drive in pegs and hold tapes but rely on David’s expertise to make sure the marquees go up in the right positions, the roadways are the right width to give access to all areas of the Show and the showing rings meet the size requirements they need.
The Show always provides a lavish spread of entertainment together with all the countryside elements which make this such a successful event. Where else would visitors be able to see the very best examples of livestock, beautiful, elegant horses, the latest in agricultural machinery and technology, traditional crafts such as shoeing and metalwork and wonderful displays of flower arrangements, all in one place.
The New Enterprise Zone will be promoting 10 start up businesses who have been trading for less than a year on Show day and have ‘won’ a free trade stand space at the Show. The Craft Marquee plays host to local craftsmen, and the Education marquee, this year sponsored by Bede’s, will be show casing the ‘how, why, what, when and where’ of agriculture. The Farmers Market area is bigger and better than ever before with local cheese makers, raw milk specialist and sausage makers occupying just a few of the stalls that will be present on Show day.
Anticipation is running high amongst all the volunteers – the JCB Dancing Diggers are this year’s main ring attraction. Pirouettes, bucket sweeps and the obligatory bangs and whistles will be the order of the day during their two displays and should not be missed.
‘Hug a hen’ was a popular feature of the Poultry marquee last year, this year pigeons will be making an appearance. The Micro Brewery is featuring the beer of local breweries and this year a pint can be enjoyed accompanied by local band El Banda Barros.
Pre-show discounted tickets are available from www.heathfieldshow.orgn or various local outlets.
