Weekly Sales News – 16 August 2016
Leave blank
Harvest is at the top of farmers agenda currently and we did not “fill” the pens with stock again this week. Demand for stock is however strong in all sections, even for pigs, as you will read in the following report and many more animals could be sold at current levels to regular buyers attending on Tuesdays ………..
Finished Sheep
1,884 Sold
Top price per kilo – 228p – Mr D C Foy: Top price per head – £97.50 – G H Dean & Co
Report on trade: A similar entry of lambs forward this week with a trade that was very similar to last week too with not quite the same level of quality on offer in the pens. The export grade continental cross lambs were once again well sold in excess of 200p to a top price of 228p from Mr DC Foy. Overall average was returned at 188p which was some 3p ahead of nationally quoted averages and almost the same as we saw last week here. Heavy weight lambs which are meat are in short supply nationally and the price per kilo of some of these heavies are not far behind the level we see for the handy weights with 47kg lambs from E J Stanford & Sons selling to 202p and 45kg lambs from M R Woodroofe to 210p.
Up to date indications of the trade are only a phone call away from any of our auctioneers or fieldsmen – please ring to discuss marketing of stock

Cull Ewes
337 sold
Report on trade: This week saw a smaller entry of ewes in the pens as a result of the busy harvest period being upon all farmers in the South East. The entry was of very mixed quality with a very small percentage of heavy fleshed ewes on offer. Grazing sorts were again in demand with many buyers present for these sorts and they sold between £40 and £60 depending on breed and age.
Continental ewes sold in to £96 from J Metianu and S Aspital, Suffolk crosses to £78 from C George and Romney ewes to £70 from Mrs V E Link. Texel rams made to £107 from Mrs C A Worley.
Finished Cattle
31 Sold
Sold by Richard Wood
Report on trade: Very short of numbers as harvest takes precedence as we have noted through this whole report. Trade continues to strengthen for all grades and more cattle are wanted of all grades to satisfy a wide specification of buyer demands.
Marvellous top end cattle from D W Ferguson Ltd saw British Blue steers make to 229p and £1165 and heifers to 228p and 225p grossing to £1190. Nice runs of commercial cattle from H G Tompsett & Sons, A J Down, K M & P M Sinden & Sons, D J Miles, and Maytham Wharf Farm all in demand and generally making 175p-200p.
Prospects look better than the big meat firms forecast but certainly at the moment tight seasonal supplies nationally are helping trade.

Cull Cows
41 Sold
Report on trade: Considering the importance of harvest in the minds of most it was pleasing to have a decent number of cows. Quality was somewhat variable but with buyers all in place another excellent trade resulted reflecting the positive influence in the meat trade created by a weaker Pound (£). Supplies are seasonally tight but autumn will arrive and it cannot be stressed highly enough that early consideration over culls is to be advised.
Little meat on offer today but it was badly wanted. Heavyweight Aberdeen Angus cows from C & J Georgetti & Sons made 128p and £1133; Sussex 127p Maytham Wharf Farm; Limousin to 127p Meyers & Davey (Non FA); Herefordx 120p Price Whitehead (Non FA) and Blonde 116p from R M & J Penny (Non FA).
Again we were very short of flesh amongst the dairy culls but all grades strong and competitive. Best cows made 120p with plenty of lean cows 80-100p. Holstein cows 121p £969 Oncoland Ltd; 116p,115p and £849 gross M A & F W Owen; Maiden overage Holstein heifers 138p from G A & H Vicary & Son; Jerseys to 89p £456 M S Clifford-Baynes.
A quality British Blue stock bull made 128p and £1153 and a heavyweight Sussex grossed £970.

Report on trade: An Aberdeen Angus bull made £840 while recently calved cows made from TB edge country made to1140 for a Charolais cow and steer calf from Meyers and Davey.
Store Cattle
43 Sold
Sold by Peter Kingwill
Report on trade: Despite being in the midst of harvest and straw there is an uncommonly strong trade for store cattle. Only a small entry but all in demand both for the long and short term cattle. Plentiful supplies of forage, available grazing and improving prospects are all factors and good numbers wanted early in September for buyers already wanting to house stronger sorts and those now feeding yearling cattle outside.
Smart Charolais bulls 10 mths £800, £670 J Boomaars; Angus x steers 10-14 mths £660, heifers £560 Meyers & Davey; British Friesian steers 14 mths £345 M Goodsell; Hereford x steer 16 mths £1045 D Peerless; Sussex steers 28-29 mths £972 & £940 Round Oak Farms.
A good trade with the differential created by TB areas subsiding as purchasers recognise that cattle will be housed by the time the 60-120 day period becomes a factor.
Calves
63 Sold
Report on trade: Harvest was at the front of producer’s minds and therefore our entry was smaller than hoped for in the pens this week. Demand was still healthy with the resulting trade again very respectable.

Store and Finished Pigs
131 Sold
Report on trade: Trade here was maintained a recent levels and reports are that demand exceeds supply across the country for the first time for a long time and prices are increasing to producers. We were short of pigs and more could have easily been sold.
The best finished pigs made to 139p per kg for C B Hope and grossing to £113 while S Scott & Sons saw a cracking shaped Pietrain gross £131. Only 2 pens made less than 100p.
The entry of cull sows and boars was short again this week with a young sow from D J Cole making 52p and £117.
In the store pig pens well bred feeders made to £48.50 from P & R Marshall (26 averaged £47.40) and £48.50 from S Scott & So. Messrs Scotts younger pigs made to £25.50.
Our pig sales are held once a fortnight and with the summer now we are seeing plenty of competition and more confidence in the pig sector after very low levels which prevailed for about 3 months in the spring. Please keep in touch with us here in Ashford if you have pigs to sell.
