Finished Sheep
2201 Sold
New season lambs Top price per head – £146 – S J Reeve; Top price per kilo – 351p – D Isaac
Report on trade: A bigger entry of lambs were on offer again this week with a similar trade to last week but less top quality on offer which certainly affected the averages. Some super Beltex cross lambs from D Isaac sold to 251p per kg (37kg at £130) and some heavy weight Suffolk lambs from S J Reeve sold to £146. More lambs will come out every week from now on and prices will be dictated by this. As always please let us know what you will be sending week on week.
Hoggets Top price per head – £156 – I Strang; Top price per kilo – 286p – R H Smith
Report on trade: Once again a similar trade to last week, these prices appear to be becoming the norm, long may it continue! Just under 2000 penned this week but many suppliers are clearing up their hoggets now and numbers do seem set to fall in the coming weeks. There were still some good quality sheep on offer this week with the heavier sorts making in excess of £150 and several of the handier weight sheep selling around the 250p mark but a pen to mention from J Smith selling to 286p for 52kg (£148.50). Demand is still strong so please let us know what you have and our advice is to sell at these levels before the hogget trade inevitably will slide.
Producers please note – For top results please present well fleshed lambs which are preferably dry and clean. Lairage facilities and dagging are available every Monday evening.
Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Cull Ewes and Rams
685 sold
Report on trade: A similar trade to recent weeks but we have now entered the Ramadan fasting period and we may see a drop in demand for the ewes until the end of this period. Meated ewes will certainly still be in demand in the coming weeks but it is usually the “also rans” that suffer in these times so as always, we would appreciate you letting us know what you are sending to market in the coming weeks.
Best ewes were once again making in excess of £100 to a top price of £135 from I Strang once again.
Top prices this week included crossbred ewes to £135 form I Strang, Suffolk crosses to £123 from S W Batch, Mules to £99 from T Tilley and Romneys to £97 from G L Boulden & Sons.

Cull Cows and bulls
72 Sold
Report on trade: Outstanding numbers were penned for the time of year with over 70 cattle in the section. With prices having been so strong for so long it is clear that more cows have been fed intensively to advantage this winter and we again saw some marvellous meat cows from both the beef and dairy sectors.
Trade was again impressive with buyers as keen as ever to secure flesh. Best beef cows made 150- 180p and readily over £1300 with the best handy weights pushing towards £1500. Grazing and feeding demand remains outstanding with forecast supplies remaining tight and young keeping cows readily made over 150p.
Dairy culls with weight and flesh made 130-140p and over £1100. A few less lean plain cows from the dairy reflecting turn out and the demand for milk in the tank.
More overage clean cattle and though they have been around for a few years they are now being sold at the top of the trade.

The best of the younger cattle sold readily in the £700 to £900 bracket while stronger sorts to finish short term made £1000 plus and up to £1130 for Simmental cross steers from R Coleman & Son.
