Top price per head – £88 – J F E Goodsell: Top price per kilo – 221p – G H Dean & Co

Report on trade: A smaller entry this week with just about 1,500 lambs penned and trade returned back to where we were prior to last week’s festival boost. A quiet market all over.

Best continental lambs were the met the strongest demand sold once again with the smartest offerings selling in excess of 200p per kg to a top price of 221p for some very smart Beltex cross lambs from G H Dean & Co with the same vendor also selling pens at 210p and 204p. Heavier offerings this week were making £85 to £88 for pens from J F E Goodsell, £88 and G H Dean & Co £87.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Report on trade: Once again trade was a bit slower following the festival over the weekend with many of the wholesale customers still celebrating up to Monday night. Several grazing sorts were on offer this week with more faces appearing to purchase these sorts each week. Grass must be growing in the south east….. These grazing types are making between £35 and £55 with only longer term sorts below that. A huge number of leaner sorts on offer this week which in turn affected the average prices returned.

Top prices included Suffolk crosses to £70 from A E Daw & Sons, continentals to £69 from Miss J & V Weeks and Romneys to £64 from Ms H V Link.

Report on trade: A similar entry of cattle with trade very much in line with recent weeks and comparing well with the deadweight prices. Another run of handyweight Limousin cross heifers took the pick of the trade making from 185p to 190p per kg and grossing up to £1004 from W S Furnival (Brookland) while other top prices included Limousin steers at £1140 (189p) from S Marsh and £1038 (185p) from G L Boulden & Sons. A Limousin cross heifer made £899 (186p) from R F & E A Simmons.

A few native bred cattle on offer sold relatively well with a smart Aberdeen Angus cross heifer topping the market at £1095 (191p) from S Marsh and purebred Sussex heifers to £875 (181p) from C D & J Bishop.

2 yr old bulls made to £894 (113p) for rangy British Blue cross from Mrs M S Clifford-Baynes

Report on trade: Another strong trade for cull cows with 5 successful individual buyers in attendance ensuring competitive return throughout.

Several beef cows were forward with purebred Sussex cows taking the pick of the trade notably £921 (116p) from A & N Bullen, £798 (110p) from J D Hickman and £786 (117p) from A B Jones & Ptnrs.

The better framed fleshed dairy cows attracted prices in excess of 110p and topping at £792 (119p) from Goddard & Son while plainer sorts look well sold in the 75p to 90p per kg bracket. Holstein/Friesians other top prices include £916 (115p) and £883 (113p) from R C & J L Pickering; £838 (104p) from P J Forknall; £791 (100p) from Huddlestone Farmers Ltd; £788 (105p) from J W Boyd & Sons Ltd and an imported Dutch cow £783 (90p) from M W Goddard.
