Top price per head – £102.50 – W G Watkins & Sons; Top price per kilo – 213p  – D C Foy

Report on trade: A small entry of lambs this week as is often the case in September and October and with reports of poor demand nationally, we saw a similar trade to last week for the best meated offerings. The heavier the better being the theme for the day.

Several good runs of strong lambs this week with the pick of the bunch being some very heavy continental cross lambs from W G Watkins & Sons which peaked at £102.50 and averaged £97. Best continental lambs sold to 213p per kg from D C Foy for Beltex cross lambs with another run of super Beltex crosses from G H Dean & Co selling in excess of 200p. The average returned at over 176p against a national figure of 173p across the country.

Producers please note – For top results please present well fleshed lambs which are preferably dry and clean. Lairage facilities are available every Monday evening.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Cull Ewes and Rams

768 sold

Report on trade: Another good sized entry of ewes forward with a huge percentage on offer being presented quite lean and showing signs of the hard summer they have had. This is also shown by the fact that over 50% were not sent to slaughter but were purchased by farmers to improve over the winter. The ewe trade nationally has been showing a downturn in recent weeks with averages dropping but this is due to the condition of the ewes on offer. Best meated sorts were selling around the £80 mark.

Top prices included continental cross ewes to £80 from Ms H V Link, Suffolk crosses to £80 from M L Williams and Romneys to £65 from R S Body & Sons.

Cull Cows and bulls

51 Sold

Report on trade: Another excellent entry of cull cows and overage beef met a very similar trade to recent weeks. Best meat remains in very short supply and badly wanted by processors, young beef cows wanted for feeding but with costs likely to be higher this winter buyers are being a little more selective. More lean killing cows are now coming through and buyers are wary of killing out percentages and yields from the poorly fleshed sorts.

The trade, for the time of year, remains at excellent levels and it cannot be stressed strongly enough that some early attention to your culling policy this autumn/winter is strongly advised sooner rather than later.

Highlights included Aberdeen Angus cross 148p per kg, 131p, 125p and grossing £1083, £985 from W S Furnival (Brookland) Ltd and 134p, 133p, 132p, £808, £795 D J Miles; Sussex 140p, 139p, £921 W J Hurley and 127p £968 J R Gunner (Non FA); British Blue cross 125p, 121p, £856, £815 W S Furnival (Brookland) Ltd and Murray Grey cross 111p D R Thompson (Non FA).

Stock bulls – flesh is  wanted and leaner types are more difficult to place. Holsteins made to 109p and £835; Hereford 106p £1102 and Limousin 102p £898.
