Weekly Sales News – 11th July 2017

A large entry of lambs were penned again this week and demand is still strong therefore prices achieved were maintained. Farmers here in the south, apart from those selling lambs, have their minds on work at home with the combines now rolling. Nearly 200 store and breeding cattle will however be penned next week. This weeks reports are below ….

New Season Lambs

Top price per head – £124 – M L Williams

Top price per kilo – 255p – C & J Georgetti & Sons

Report on trade: A good sized entry of 2600 new season lambs penned this week and a flying trade throughout with the overall average up by £10 and 20p per kg on the corresponding week of last year with the heavier the lambs selling on a super hot trade to average 232p! Bigger, heavier lambs are still in short supply nationally and with the hoggets fallen away to a very small number the home trade cutting wholesalers are having to compete strongly to secure these heavier carcasses for butchers and caterers. Lots of lambs sold in excess of £100 to a top price of £124 from M L Williams for some 50kg+ lambs. Another run to note was from C & J Georgetti & Sons with over 150 lambs which returned an overall average of £101.50 to a top price of £120. Export grade lambs sold to a top price of 241p from C R & G Daws (39kg @ £94).

A small end of season entry of hoggets on offer with around 140 penned. Top price per head was taken by Kingswood Trees at £90 (50kg).

Producers please note – For top results please present well fleshed lambs which are preferably dry and clean. Lairage facilities are available every Monday evening.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

DEFRA and our Local Authority trading standards officers regularly remind us of our responsibilities regarding unfit animals. No unfit animal should be exposed for sale in a market.

We have been reminded by the Local Authority that it is against current Welfare and Market Regulations to move stock to market, or any other holding, in the final stages of pregnancy (final 4 weeks). Please be careful with dates on breeding stock and cull stock that might turn out to be in lamb or in calf.

All animals should be fit to travel. All in milk cows should to be milked out prior to movement to market. Do not present lame sheep or those, for any reason, which are not fit to be transported. Thanks for your attention to these matters.

Notice from Trading Standards on Sheep tags

Sheep producers are reminded that all sheep now require electronic tags, either single, double or re replacements. Please refer to Defra guidelines for the necessary type of tag required depending on the sheep you are presenting for sale.
