Weekly Sales News – 11th April 2017

Finished Sheep
2048 Sold
Hoggets: Top price per kg – 199p – G & A Wood; Top price per head – £88 – G Husk
Report on trade: A smaller entry of finished hoggets this week in the pens with a poorer quality show of medium and standard weight sheep. This has had a negative impact on the returned averages but on comparative basis trade was at similar levels, if not slightly stronger than last weeks. It was once again noticeable that certain buyers were only able to purchase Farm Assured sheep and this shows in the average prices returned and we would advise all of our vendors to obtain certification in one of these schemes.
Best grade continental hoggets sold to 199p from G & A Wood with top spots in the heavy weight category selling to £88 from G Husk for some 55kg offerings.
A good quality early season entry of new season lambs in the pens for the Easter Show and Sale with 120 lambs penned. Show results, as judged by Mrs C Worley were as follows:
1st – Lance Geering, Friday Street Farmers, Eastbourne 36kgs £90 bought by A Head
2nd – J Farrant, Goudhurst 35kgs £87 bought by A Head
3rd – Mrs V McDonald, Hardres, Canterbury 40kgs £93 bought by A Head
All the lambs sold on a strong trade for the Easter market place with the show winners as above. Top price per kilo went to J Howie at 271p and the top price per head went to M Critcher & Ptnrs at £103. More lambs will be offered every week now but please advise us what you are sending.
Producers please note – For top results please present well fleshed lambs which are preferably dry and clean. Lairage facilities are available every Monday evening.
Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.
