Cull Cows and Bulls – 79 Sold

Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill – 07795 200357

Report on trade: A tremendous day in the cow section with good numbers, a strong attendance of buyers, decent overall quality and a very firm trade reflecting the keen demand for processing beef. Both finished cows and feeding animals were in competitive demand and the next month or two will see the high point of the cow trade. Farm Assurance is a must to ensure best returns for slaughter cattle although the feeding men are less fussy as they are generally able to secure assured status with 90 days of residency.

Plenty of fleshed beef cows made 120-140p per kg with a few specials or youngsters hitting the high spots up to 170p. Non-assured meat cows 90-115p and exempt cows finding no problems either to kill or feed.

Best prices included Limousin at 170p from K I Lingham, 142p T Husk and 136p Beaute Farm; Simmental 155p Campbell Bros and 129p (£1067) G Bates Ltd; Blonde 140p D Wade; Hereford 136p M J Burton; Charolais 131p (£966) T H & B C Loeber and 128p (£912), (exempt) M J Booth ad British Blue 130p(2) from M A & F W Owen.

We saw a quality show of black and whites with some massive cows on offer. Best made 110-120p with steakers again, looking very well sold and plain cows dearer. Holstein made to 119p (£954) from P J Forknall; Holstein Friesian 117p (2) (£1025) Goddard & Son, 116p, 115p and 114p (£1058) from J S & M D Antrum & Son and 115p and 114p (£916) R Torrance & Son with Guernsey 119p (£764) W G & T A Manford and Jersey 84p (£434) Hickson Bros.

Store and Finished Pigs – 192 Sold Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688

Report on trade: On a national trade that still shows no real signs of going anywhere (upwards only one day we hope!) a good quality entry of finished pigs were well received by two major abattoirs looking for stock and also local buyers. The cull pigs were a stand on trade and there is a reluntance from store pig buyers to take on large numbers of stock.

The best finished pigs made to 85p per kg from J Watt with a top gross of £79 for heavy pigs from C B Hope. P W & P Sims regular run made to 82p and £67.

Cull sows and boars made to 30p three times for sows and 20p for a middleweight boar.

In the store pig pens strong weaners made to £29, £40 for medium weight Welsh feeders from D Finch and weaners £27 from M J Booth.

Our pig sales are held once a fortnight and with spring and summer on the way we all hope the trade and confidence in the pig sector will rise again (from the very low levels prevailing for about 3 months on more now!). Please keep in touch with us here in Ashford if you have pigs to sell.

Heathfield Show news – the show society have issed the following press release

“Livestock Entries at Heathfield Show – Saturday 28th May at Little Tottingworth Farm, Broad Oak, Heathfield, East Sussex.

Just three more Saturdays and it will be the Heathfield Show. Anticipation and excitement are running high because the JCB Dancing Diggers will be performing at this year’s Show. This will be a first for the Heathfield Show and, indeed, for many who visit the Show.

Sheep and pig entries for the Heathfield Show are considerably up in 2016. The Committees have worked hard in promoting the competitions and their hard work has paid off.

Unfortunately, cattle entries, which were also up in 2016, had a blow when the Government decided to change the rules regarding TB and cattle movements. East Sussex has suffered a particular blow with the changing of the rules which now means that out of county cattle are unable to travel easily and economically into East Sussex for showing purposes. This unfortunately resulted in nearly 70% of our entries being withdrawn. Nevertheless, our local farmers are whole heartedly behind the Show and there will be a fine exhibition of Sussex and other beef cattle. Dairy entries, unfortunately, haven’t faired so well, particularly as there are very few East Sussex farmers now showing their dairy cows. We are very happy that the Heasmans, sponsored by Silcocks Farm Shop, will be putting on a demonstration of milking at the Show.

For fast and easy entry to the Heathfield & District Agricultural Show at discounted rates please visit the web site (www.heathfieldshow.org) and purchase your e-tickets on line. Alternatively, they discounted tickets can be purchased from some local outlets, a full list of which is on line also or by phoning the Show Secretary on 01435 864587.

Any queries please contact the Show office or visit our web site for full details. Secretary: Nicola Magill 01435 864587”
