Cull Ewes and Rams – 805 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Report on trade: A few extra were penned today with over 900 in total and with the loading bays used as pens again this year. Please advise us of any large consignment of ewes you wish to sell for advice on the correct marketing strategy.

Top prices on the day included continental ewes to £101 from H F & J H Glover, Suffolk crosses to £87 form Mr T Telling, Romneys to £78 from Small Bros and Mules to £80 form L J & J P Bolton

Cull Cows and Bulls – 88 Sold

Auctioneer: Richard Wood

Report on trade: This trade was very similar overall with slightly increased numbers but nothing very special about the overall quality. Feeders and graziers remain very strong bidders making some cattle 20-25p per kg ahead of their slaughter value. Flesh was in short supply and remaining positive, whilst the poorer boning cows from the dairy very much reflect lack of yield and waste. Farm assurance is very important in order to maximise returns on slaughter types.

Best beef cows made 130-150p with a few specials flying well beyond this. Limousin 167p and £1024 and 148p and £1025 from Mr L Smith; Limousin 148p and 134p for A Boyd & Co; Simmentals 140p Scott & Godden; Limousin cross 139p R F&E A Simmons; British Blue cross 128p E W & R E Hanks and Aberdeen Angus 124p and 118p from B Sutton.

More flesh is wanted from the dairy culls. A strong Brown Swiss made 120p and £1016 from D Murdoch & Son; Holstein 110p and £903 J Leggat & Son with Jerseys 100p and £632, 96p and £582 and 78p from Hickson Bros.

Confidence is strong and numbers nationally are not high so hunt out your non productive cows from beef and dairy herds.

Store Cattle – 202 Sold

Auctioneer: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901

Report on trade: A good selection of store cattle with several late entries boosting numbers to over 200 head in the end. Again this was another strong trade with a good attendance of buyers and prices continuing at recent high levels.

Stronger continental cross stores attracted prices mainly in the £800 to £1000 bracket with 20 mth Simmental cross steers topping the market at £1070 from G Gregory. An 18 mth Blonde cross steer made £965 from P Langridge, 18 mth British Blue x Friesian steers £905 from L Palmer and Sons and a 14 mth Limousin cross steer at £830 from R & J Brightling.

Several runs of native breeds were on offer and sold to a competitive trade with 14 mth Hereford cross steers £728 and 15 mth Aberdeen Angus cross heifers £768 from M J Booth. Heifers suitable for breeding attracted a good premium with a run of 18 mth Aberdeen Angus x Friesian heifers selling well with up to £868 from E J Gribble.

Calves – 82 Sold

Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688

Report on trade: A larger and generally better quality entry was again extremely well received by buyers and a tremendous trade resulted. Black and white bulls were a better trade throughout the entry with more potential rearers to bid for them today. Both continental and native beef crosses produced some tremendous prices too. Confidence to rear is clear – long may this continue. Sellers should be putting their calves on the open market in Ashford.

Highlights in the beef crosses were many and included a late January orn British Blue bull from J Warnock and Son at £425; November born Limousin cross bulls from the Squerryes Estate dairy Partnership to £350, Sussex crosses to £315 and South Devons £305; a Simmental bull to £405 from R & J Ledger (bn mid January); R Torrance and Son’s British Blue bulls to £340 and heifers £320 (January born) and then top spot to Ledger Farms with their December born British Blue bulls £470, £460, £435 and £425 and heifers £340 to £385. To finish the beef story W S Furnival Ltd sold an Aberdeen Angus bull at £280 (January born) and a young Blonde cross bull at £320 and J E Scutt and Sons again a January born Aberdeen Angus bull at £335.

Reared black and white bulls made to £150 for M W Goddard and £122 from J E Scutt and Sons. Well presented younger models made either side of £100 and more Holstein and younger sorts £25 to £80 and a few bobbies less than this.

Please keep your entries of calves coming. At our fortnightly sales we expect to have plenty of enquiries for all shapes, sizes and ages of stock. Thank you all for texts and messages with early notice of your entries for forthcoming sales – it does help.

The best finished pigs made to 81p per kg and £72 per head from P W Sim and C B Hope. Nothing made this week below 55p per kg
