The third sale of the year has now been and gone and with the much prayed for rain arriving in timely fashion in advance of the sale, we have certainly seen quite a nice lift in demand.
Averages were up about £6/hd on the day but I personally feel that if the quality of the entry was taken into account, that they were more like £10/hd up on the previous sale. Several strong lambs were selling from £120-£130/hd and topped at £135/hd for some strong Texel crosses from P & R Locke, closely followed by W Stewart Wood at £133/hd and Ian Lucas at £130/hd. Several pens of lambs that would be suited to further finishing on creep sold from £120/hd upwards with the more general middle term sheep from £105-£120/hd and long term lambs and Romney wethers from £90-£105/hd. With the wider spread rain across the country over the weekend, it would be fair to suggest that these lamb prices will be sustainable and there’s every chance they will strengthen further in the coming weeks with more buyers coming out each sale.
A strong trade in the breeding sheep section with more numbers starting to come forward as we move further into the autumn months.
Top call on the day came twice from both P Smith and W Miller & Son with Suffolk x Mule shearlings from both vendors topping at £265/hd. Other Suffolk x Mule shearlings from J L Cooper topped at £250/hd (twice) and Texel x Mule shearling from T Husk not far behind topping at £248/hd.
We have a much larger entry of breeding sheep for Friday 4th September with some very smart shearlings entered to include a run of 350 North Country Mule shearlings from T Crick (Norfolk) and 100 Suffolk x NCM shearlings from L Andreozzi.
