Report on trade:
A more autumnal feel in the air with more rain in the past week certainly helping to boost the enthusiasm in the buying support this week. Some familiar faces returned to the ring this week from further West, and their support certainly boosted prices for the store lambs on offer. Averages for the feeding lambs were improved on the previous weeks limited entry on ewe lamb day, and we hope that this will be sustained during the next month of selling. We saw some fit strong stores on the day from C Koralty top the sale at £179 head with others from the same vendor at £174. More genuine stores topped at £130.50 from J Hooker & Son with several others in excess of £110 head with the average of £98/ head to include all lambs sold on the day.
“Running” type of lambs, which make up most of the lambs on offer now, traded from £88-98 head with the £100 barrier stopping many of these buyers at the top end of their budgets. Romney wethers this week saw some quality offerings from Langrish farmers who topped at £107 head.
This week there will be another good entry of almost 6,000 store sheep on Friday and Romney day will follow the week after. Keep the numbers coming!
Another reasonable show of ewe tegs forward and plenty of customers showing their confidence in the industry going forward. Perhaps more trade with the crossbreds than the straight mules but perhaps this reflects the rams going straight in with these ewes to work.
Smart Texel x Mules from Mrs Catherine Cox topped the day at £232 whilst the Suffolk x Mules were reflecting the tough summer condition and generally £180-£200. A good consistent run of North Country Mules from Plumpton College generally £180- £200, with just the bottom pen at £168.
