A big entry of sheep and a big trade to match it. Many may wish to reference the Farmers Guardian predictions and I am pleased to say that these have come true a little earlier than maybe initially expected with a big jump in money this week.  Some super quality runs of sheep on offer this week with a big number of Suffolk cross Mule wethers on offer, being the tradition the week after ewe lamb sale. With a ring packed full of buyers, we saw a demand for these like we have rarely seen before with genuine stores topping at £143/hd from R Price & Sons, closely followed by M A & F W Owen at £142/hd. A good number of these stronger lambs sold from £120-£130 with an overall average for all lambs sold on the day returned at £117/hd, up by £10 on the previous sale.

Smaller lambs that many are now looking for, based both on cost per head and the time at which people wish to sell them are very heavily competed for, and many of these are now well in excess of £100/hd and trading generally from £105-£110/hd. Romney wethers on the day were well received, with the West Country buying contingent active, and topped at £119 from Mr Harry Metcalfe with several trading between £100-110/hd.

We had a firm trade in the breeding section with Texel shearlings from R & N Warnock to £252 and Texel cross shearlings from D Barr to £220. North Country Mule shearlings to go on and do from Plumpton College to £232 with majority of their run £230; smart North Country Mules shearlings from W G Vant & Sons to £250.

Highlight of the day was an outstanding flock dispersal of North Country Mule ewes, 1-4 lambers, from D Howard Farms Ltd which topped at £268 (twice) for one lamb ewes, with two lamb ewes to £252, and only the four lamb ewes sold a little below the £200 mark.

Friday 18^th September is Romney Day with a very large selection of both shearlings and ewes on offer to include a flock dispersal from A & A W Pritchard (Lincolnshire) of NZ Romneys from shearlings to aged ewes.
