Report on trade: A good entry for the special Romney Day and generally trade was selective for the mixed quality on offer.
The ewe lambs were not the strength of previous years with the dry summer and tight grazing having an impact. The best offer attracted prices in excess of £75 and up to £94 for top prize winners consigned by H Metcalfe while the bottoms proved more difficult to gain a premium with the majority selling at store value in the £50 to £65 bracket.
A similar trade in the ewe teg section with customers for the best and attracting prices in the £110 to £130 bracket with second quality sorts discounted and selling from £85 to £100.
A good entry of 1,400 breeding ewes were on offer for this annual Romney day sale. These older sheep sold on probably the best trade of the day with a number of buyers present from all over the UK. Top spot was taken by Church Street Farm for some strong 1 lamb ewes at £102 with several other pens selling in excess of £90 from A & A Barr Farms, S J & J L Vine and Les Ramsden. Overall the average for the ewes on offer was returned at £74.
The 120th show and sale of pedigree Romney ram tegs drew an entry of 72 rams. The competition was judged by John Coultrip, Faversham in individual pens beside each consignment and results were as follows:
Best ram teg and overall champion N A Balcomb & Son, Lydd which made £750 to A Barr and Son, Maidstone; second ram teg W Stewart Wood, Sittingbourne and third N A Balcomb & Son
Best woolled ram teg Horne & Son, Westwell which made £700 to N A Balcomb & Son; second N A Balcomb & Son and third W Stewart Wood.
Best Signet recorded ram teg H V Link Partnership which made top call on the day of £1,000 to Langrish Farmers, Rye; second and third both from P H & P E Skinner, Sissinghurst
The Balcomb top pen took both the group of three and Hobbs Parker best pen of five prizes too. Karims Fallen Stock Ltd were show sponsors for the class and championship prizes.
In the sale ring demand was a little limited away from that for the best with 6 making over £500.
In the purebred (not registered section tegs that caught a buyers eye made £180 to £300 with N A Balcomb & Son selling 9 between £250 and £300
