Sheep Sales Reports

New Season Lambs – 1,160 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Top price per kilo – 390p – Miss M. Friend, Kent.
Top price per head – £200.00 – H G Tompsett & Sons, Kent.

A few less than last week and trade on a similar level, and consistent with recent weeks. The best prices are always achieved by the heaviest concentrate fed sheep and today was no exception with a top of £200 taken by H G Tompsett & Sons for a very heavy consignment. Others were often over £180 head from D J Morphett and Miss Amy Hedges, alongside Barleybrook Farm, S P Howland, and S King. Trade is a little up and down at the moment with, certainly, more lower priced lambs coming from the North that dilutes the trade for lighter sheep. Most of these are still £3 kg and upwards, and the overall average was 312p kg, some 10p above the national average for the day before.

Cattle Sales Reports

Finished Cattle –  54 Sold
Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill 07795 200357.

Good numbers again but a very different complexion to the entry with very few best fleshed beef cattle; again, numbers of grass fed cattle of all breeds; and a considerable number of minority breeds from grass. All that said, there was no problem with the trade which stays at very similar levels to the last month.
Very best cattle can push through 400p with an outstanding Blonde heifer from Dan Mackelden Ltd selling to 405p, £2326; a well-shaped young Charolais bull from Highfields Park at 400p, £2637; and Limousin steers from W S Furnival and P W & P Sim & Son to 378p, £2624. Other good beef bred cattle generally 370-390p.
Not the flesh, in general, on the dairy bred cattle but quality indoor Limousin x Friesian steers from A J Down to 375p, £2324, Herefords to 351p, £2121.
Well fleshed Angus heifers from W S Furnival to 355p, £2056. Plenty of customers to bid for the leaner grass types in need of that extra finish whatever their age.
Close to 20 minority bred cattle in the fat section and all finding a strong trade throughout. Longhorn heifer from Gate Street Farm, Guildford to 338p, £1553 whilst grass fed Dexter heifers 24 mths sold to 272p, 270p, 264p, 260p (4) £830 with 13 averaging £830 from Stone Farms. Decent numbers of dairy culls, and there would be more if it were not for the box tickers at LaLa dairies insisting that cows go straight to their friends at the supermarket abattoirs preventing market forces from working and depriving many farms from benefitting from a wider audience. Time for members to write the rules!
