New Season Lambs – 1,371 Sold

Top price: 362p p/kg – D Hopper
Top price per head: £171 T Masters

A similar amount forward this week and fears of a dip in trade following the busy bank holiday weekend were soon put away with a superb trade for all lambs. Probably the best quality entry of lambs we have seen this year with 25 lots of sheep selling over £150 hd to a top of £171 from Tom Masters, who showed 200 lambs  to, once again, average just under £160. Another notable run of 200 head from M J Ashworth sold to average just a shade over £150. Big smiles all around!

Smaller lambs for export were in keen demand with Dan Hopper topping the charts here at 362p kg, with Friday Street Farmers and P & E Andreozzi in close second at 358p. Long may it last!

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Top price: 308p/kg – R T, J B & I Lockwood
Top price per head: £168 – R L Goodman & Son

Really getting to the bottom of the barrel now in term of choice and quality, but a trade like we have not seen this year with the heavy hoggets, in particular, and even the mature sheep selling to £168 hd from R L Goodman & Son and several pens of hoggets over £150. These bigger types are certainly boosted by the strength of the ewe trade with an upcoming festival on the horizon. Numbers are really going to drop to next to nothing in the next couple of weeks so take advantage if you can!

Cull Sheep – 262 Sold

Auctioneer: James Cook O’Connell 07712246474

Ewes: Top £196 – P & E Andreozzi, Average £135.17
Rams: Top £190 – M Furey, Average £145.03

Probably the dearest we have ever seen the ewes with a tremendous trade throughout. The strong meat ewes are in short supply and were consistently £130 – £160, with the very best keenly sought at close to £200! Leaner strong ewes £90 – £130 head with plain grazing types £60 – £90. Demand is high and supplies low, so prices are strengthening in anticipation of the main Muslim Festival of Eid al Adha in early July. Take advantage now!

Top prices included:

Texel to £196 – P & E Andreozzi, Charollais to £186 – P & E Andreozzi, Suffolk cross to £162 – J Hooker & Son, Blue Texel to £161 – J Pearce, Romneys to £152 – A B Jones & Ptnrs, Mules to £136 – T Morgan & Son
