Big show of lambs for festival week, with Tuesdays markets really being the last day to buy sheep for this as it commences on Wednesday. Trade rallied all the way throughout the sale and despite not being the heights that were seen at the end of last week, all fed and finished lambs were selling well over £3 kg with only the grass lambs really below that on the second tier of the trade and the overall average was 304p kg. Top spots on the day were taken by Mr Tom Husk and P N & C Burden but many runs of top quality fed lambs were close behind them from M J Ashworth, Mr Tom Masters, G H Dean & Co and L E Humphreys & Sons to name just a few.

A small entry of end of season types again this week with the best up to £125 hd. The numbers will soon decrease to nothing in this section as the festival most likely just found a few for today.

A few less in the pens this week however a cracking trade throughout with a good number of well fleshed ewes. The best ewes regularly £100 – £120 and to a top price of £160 from N A Balcomb & Sons for some cracking Texel ewes. Medium sorts £70 – £90 on most occasions with leaner grazing types £40 – £60 throughout. Please do not hesitate to get in contact with any ewes you have to sell.

Cattle Sales Reports

Finished Cattle –  49 Sold

An increased entry and while the best continental cross beef bred cattle held recent high values the dairy and native cattle eased slightly compared to recent weeks and in line with National trend.
In addition to the leading prices quoted below notably from M B Farms and A J Thompson & Sons other top prices included a Limousin cross steer at £1873 (278p) and Limousin cross heifer at £1559 (279p) from W Alexander (Shoreham).
The regular consignment of Limousin x Friesian steers from A J Down attracted prices In excess of 245p and up to £1567 (264p) while his Friesian steers looked relatively well sold up to £1387 (255p). Purebred Sussex cattle dominated the native breed section with majority in excess of 230p with top prices including steers at £1490 (262p) from K & P M Sinden & Son and £1417 (247p) from C E & W S Millson and heifer at £1210 (245p) from D M Brown.

OTM Cattle and Cull Cows – 32 Sold

Numbers in short supply this week with farmers busy caching up on other work. Nevertheless, trade held firm and although no real top quality in the beef sector the best on offer topped at £1516 (190p) for Limousin cross from J Batchelor & Partners and Aberdeen Angus cross to £1309 (185p) from A J Thompson & Sons.
Some reasonably fleshed cows in the dairy section sold relatively well a run of Friesian cows from Debden Court Ltd selling well at £1100 plus and up to £1216 (214p) and grossing up to £1307 while Holstein / Friesian cows sold up to £1304 (191p) from Messrs Goddard & Son and £1112 (173p) from W P Hope & Son.
A good competitive trade for the over 30 mths with Flekvieh cross steer topping at £1706 (225p) from E T Ledger & Son Ltd and Friesian heifer grossed well at £1496 (219p) from W S Furnival Ltd.

Pigs – 20 Sold

Finished (8) – A strong trade for the good on offer with numbers lacking we saw a few buyers going away empty handed. Trade is here and demand is strong, do considered entering for a fortnights time! Top price 90p pk or £212.80 from B G & M A Tompsett with 95 kg pigs from C Higgins to £159.60 or 168p pk.
Stores (12) – Strong demand for stores with a slightly better entry in terms of numbers and quality. Best forward stores from I Machin to £77 per head with smaller weaners to £59 from D Meeham and £25 from K Doran.
