New Season Lambs – 1,785 Sold
Top price per kg: 331p – C A Worley Farming Ltd
Top price per head: £158.00 – P N & C Burden
A similar sized entry this week but the trade has taken a hit in recent days due to several factors – Wholesale demand is always less following the festival, as customers have stocked up on meat; less lamb is sold in warm weather; and the problems that have been occurring at the borders have caused some export orders to be put on hold. Despite this, in Ashford, we saw a very good trade in comparison to other markets with an overall average of 264p kg whereas many other centres have been up to 30p kg below this. This hit to the trade has affected the grass finished lambs more than any others with the creep fed lambs selling on a trade that was on a par to recent weeks, albeit a little bit less than last week, which was boosted but many markets choosing not to operate. Best finished lambs sold in excess of £3 kg on many occasions with some superb Beltex from C A Worley Farming Ltd selling up to 331p kg. Heavier cutting lambs for the butcher sold over £150 hd on many occasions from P N & C Burden, G H Dean & Co and C & J Georgetti & Sons.

OTM Cattle and Cull Cows – 51 Sold
Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill 07795 200357
More culls now coming forward nationally as the hot dry weather has its effect on grazing. The plainer end of the market is suffering most with leaner dairy culls most affected by the start of school holidays, and the simple fact that costs involved in recovery of low yields of meat from plain cows are considerably higher than from better fleshed types.
All grades were easier overall but best beef meat and feeding cows are still up over 200p kg with plenty of decent types 170-190p kg. plainer cows 130-160p kg.
Good fleshed dairy culls 160-180p kg with plenty of strong steakers 130-150p. Plain cows 100-120p with a few bottom end types now below 100p.

Store and Finished Pigs – 23 Sold
Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07741 845230
This week saw a small entry. We need more numbers to fulfil demand which is strengthening at this current time.
The entry of finished pigs saw only 2 pens forward which made 114p and 120p per kg with Saddleback gilts grossing £108.30 from M Wilson and Black pigs £112.80 from S & D Butler.
The cull pens saw mainly light models which made 14p and 15p grossing to £33.
The two pens of store pigs made £41 for a pen of strong feeders and £26 for younger Saddleback crosses.
All pig enquiries should be directed to Tom Hamplett on 07966 104532
Notices – John Lowings, Ashford
John Lowings – Former Secretary and Director of Ashford Cattle Market Co Ltd.
We are sad to learn of the death of John Lowings earlier this month.
John was a director of Ashford Cattle Market for 27 years and served as the Company Secretary for 23 years before his retirement in 2014.
John’s contribution to the efficient management and development of the business was of enormous value. This was especially the case in the late 1990’s during the sensitive and complex negotiations relating to the relocation of the Market from the old town centre site to its current location on Orbital Park.
John will be remembered fondly by all at the market company for his wise counsel and sound advice, which he provided in his own cheerful and helpful way.
