A few more in the pens and once again a slightly improved trade as the quality and finish of the lambs on offer were very high today topping at £200 for both C & J Georgetti & Sons and D Howard Farms Ltd. Meat is at a premium amid many leaner types in the entry as finished lambs are non-existent on farms unless they are being intensively fed. Lambs over 50kg are all over £180/hd and many well past this point. Smaller continental type lambs with good finish are selling from 340p/kg to 380p/kg with the overall average returned at 340p/kg, slightly improved on last week.

Trade remains firm as numbers continue to come forward despite seeing plenty of leaner sorts.
The best are now short and £140 – £170 on most occasions with top call on the day going to Christy Clark for smart Beltex crosses. Medium sorts regularly £110 – £140 with leaner grazing types £80 – £110 throughout with only a very small number sold below these figures.
The trade we are seeing looks to be staying at a very respectable level with more ewes of all grades wanted in order to satisfy weekly buyer demand.

Not too many on offer here today with just over 40 finished and 12 overage types on offer, of very mixed quality. Best on the day was R F & E A Simmons with a smart heifer at 367p/kg which was matched by A J Thompson & Sons, with a similar heifer. Heavier types topped at £2349 from A J Thompson & Sons again but no real show stopper types on offer this week to make the big headlines. Beef demand is steady each and every week but it is still thought prices may firm up once again when the schools return.

A real mixture in this section today with the weather taking its toll on many cattle, particularly the older production dairy cows. Fed stock reaping a strong reward with the best killing cattle and feeders still able to push up to 300p kg from John Berryman, with best heavyweight Aberdeen Angus cows to £2618 from Mrs K Butcher; Hereford cows to £2242 from J S & M I Tilley and Holstein cows to £1979 from P J Forknall.
Limousin – 300p £1917 J Berryman, 288p £1926 H & J Noakes, Aberdeen Angus – 283p £1921 B G & M A Tomsett, Charolais – 264p £1963 N Morgan, Sussex – 247p £1676 L Stevens & Sons, 244p £1351 S C Gammon, Hereford – 239p £2242 J S & M I Tilley, 237p £1917 Herbert & Sons.
Prices are easing back with more plain cows coming into the processing market but shape and flesh are finding a premium price in the competitive market. Best cows to 258p kg from B J Goodsell and £1979 for a Holstein from P J Forknall. Dairy Shorthorns with cover to 233p kg and lightweight Jerseys looking well sold at 163p, £756.
Not a very special group of overage and largely lightweight feeders. However, strong 5 year+ Aberdeen Angus steers to 266p, £2177 from Dr A Martin, whose White Park steers of a similar age, with wide horns, sold to 262p, £1765.

An early autumn sale of store and breeding cattle brought numbers forward with buyers from across the region.
In the breeding section we had a Herd Dispersal of pedigree Hereford cow & calf outfits on behalf of Grange Farm Partnership with outfits to £2950 and a super average just shy of £2700 per outfit.
In the store cattle section, we had younger sorts from Kent Game Shooting which were Aberdeen Angus x Friesian 10 mths topping at £930 followed by stronger British Blue cross heifers from P H Hope to £1430. Hereford steers 16 mths from B C Ginger topped at £1470 and Charolais cross steers 9 mths from G A Verity to £1480 with British Blue cross heifers from the same home to £1400. Sussex steers 16 mths from K Hawes to £1430 followed by a superb run of Sussex steers 16 mths from B Luck Ltd which topped at £1840. Hall Place Farm had a run of their homebred dairy crosses forward with Aberdeen Angus x Friesian steers 18 mths to £1820 and Aberdeen Angus x Friesian heifers to £1700. Suckler bred Aberdeen Angus cross steers 16-18 mths from H & J Noakes to £1790 with heifers from the same home to £1600. J S & M I Tilley topped at £1850 with their suckler bred Aberdeen Angus cross steers 16-18 mths with the heifers from the same home to £1840. Smart Limousin steers 19 mths from R J Husk topped at £1950 and British Blue x Friesian steers 20 mths from P Lanham topped at £1900. Strong Friesian steers 23-26 mths from B J Goodsell & Son saw £1700 for their best and a run from D J Cornforth topped at £1700 for 27 mths British Blue cross steers.

Producers are reminded that all cattle require two ear tags with at least one large distance readable tag. Please inspect stock in good time to order replacement tags as, regrettably, any stock that are incorrectly tagged may not be offered for sale. Local authority inspectors will be taking note as stock comes to market.
