A good entry of lambs today, up by nearly 400 head on last week with a trade also slightly improved. Best meated sort, of which there was a bigger percentage of them on offer, were well sold with all in excess of £100 other than a few very light weights. Leaner types on offer today were once again sold on a similar level to the stores, if not a few pounds higher. Top spots were taken by the Georgetti family with G H Dean & Co sharing the honours in the pence per kilo category at 284p.

A larger show once again with trade on par with last week and a larger percentage of plainer ewes on offer once again. Best fleshed ewes £110-£140 with the very best on the day to £208 from J Warnock & Sons for some superb Texel ewes. Medium sorts £80-£110 on most occasions with plainer grazing sort regularly £45-£75. Overall trade still looks to be at a good level in comparison to recent years.

Cattle Sales Reports

Finished Cattle – 66 Sold

The largest entry of finished for some time and while prices were not quite at last week’s high levels this was still a very decent trade. The best bred continental cross in excess of 250p with smart Limousin cross heifer topping the market at £1406 (259p) from W Alexander (Shoreham) and Limousin cross steer t £1480 (258p) from M W Goddard. A quality run of Limousin cross from A J Thompson & Sons saw the best at 240p plus with steers at £1569 (250p) and £1676 (240p) and heifers £1447 (250p) and £1527 (243p). Lean steers with weight and further finishing sold well notably Blue cross steers £1583 (246p) and £1467 (245p) while dairy bred Limousin cross steers mainly sold between 230p and 239p grossing £1400 plus and up to £1547 from A J Down.

An increased entry of native bred cattle sold well and at similar levels to previous weeks with the best 220p plus notably Angus cross heifer topping the section at £1324 (235p) from W Alexander (Shoreham), Angus cross steer £1542 (226p), Sussex steer £1572 (222p) and Hereford cross heifer £1342 (230p) all from D W Page & Son and purebred Sussex steer £1332 (229p) from A & J Pace.

Very short of cattle this week with surprisingly few Black & Whites in the entry. Trade again extremely firm both for the slaughter cattle as well as the feeding types with supplies undoubtedly going to be short this autumn and winter.

An outstanding purebred British Blue cow from Price & Shelbourne leading the field realising 236p £1872 but plenty of others 180p – 210p.

Very much a seasonal entry today with a handful of breeding cattle and a few stores to compliment the day. Commercial Dexter cows & calves from J King to £395, steers to £750 for 14mth dairy bred Angus from P Allum, heifers from the same home to £1,100 again for Angus cross with a little more age and size at 19mth.

Store & Finished Pigs – 31 Sold

Finished – 9. A better quality entry this week with fewer numbers about. Trade has certainly lifted on the fortnight with a top of £136 or 160p for Saddleback Gilts from Kingswood. Brockhill Performing Arts College sold Boars to £128 (128p).

Stores – 16. A limited entry today with Oxford cross weaners from Spot House Farm, Ashford sold to a top of £17 for Gilts.

Cull Pigs – More spark in the trade today with sows to £83.85 or 43p from N Woitrin. A small selection but others around the 40p mark looked promising. Boars still harder to place but more spark again with a top of 25p from N Woitrin.
