More lambs on offer this week with just under 1,800 new seasons in the pens, trade has eased slightly as big numbers are now coming out around the country as many farmers take advantage of the good prices which are even available for very light weight grass fed lambs. Despite this increase in numbers, trade is still unbelievable for this time of year and still a huge amount of heavy types were sold in excess of £200/hd and this week topped at £244/hd for some superb quality heavy lambs from Mr Tom Holt. The main difference in the trade was really in the addition of some leaner grass fed types which, despite being exceptionally well sold on the day for what they are, are still of a lesser value than the creep fed alternatives and are selling nearer 400p/kg as opposed to the fed handy weights at 450p/kg. We did anticipate that the prices we were seeing would ease but it must be remembered that we are still probably £20/hd above prices that we saw at this time last year.

Cull Sheep – 141 Sold
Auctioneer: James Cook-O’Connell 07780133678
Top Price: £220.00 – P Gorringe – Ave. £150.30
A super trade once again for all grades with numbers short as to be expected for the time of year but with weaning fast approaching, this could soon change.
The best regularly £160 – £190 to a top price of £220 from P Gorringe for some cracking Beltex ewes. Medium sorts £130 – £160 on most occasions with leaner grazing types £100 – £130 throughout with only a very small number sold below these figures.
More numbers would be of no concern with buyers present for all grades every week and demand currently outweighing supply.
Top Prices Included:
Beltex to £220 – P Gorringe, Charollais to £213 – M & K Butchers, Texels to £202 – Mrs L Head, Suffolk cross to £190 – P Gorringe, Texel cross to £188 – J Hooker & Son, Crossbred to £180 – M J Ashworth, Cheviot to £175 – Miss H Challis, Romneys to £155 – M S D Wood.
Ewes & Lambs 91 sold
Auctioneer: James Cook-O’Connell 07780133678
Numbers of couples seem to be winding down now with only a very few long term sorts from T Burbridge in the pens topping at £198 per outfit for mainly Lleyn cross ewes with Texel lambs at foot.
We will still have a section available for couples every week so do not hesitate to get in contact to book them in.

Cattle Reports
Finished Cattle – 55 Sold
Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903.
Fresh face on the rostrum this week and trade maybe a little stronger than last week with just over 50 finished cattle on offer, mostly from the regular vendors, and averages up by about 5p on the week. Barbeque season is upon us and beef requirements will ultimately lift as retail demand raises for prime cuts, which happens most years. Best on the day were some well finished and shapely cattle from R F & E A Simmons with a Limousin cross heifer at 387p/kg and Dan Mackelden Ltd with the top price in the lump of £2,641/hd. Trade predictions are tricky at this time of year but it appears we are in a time of more evident reality in the beef industry with some early 2026 prices quite difficult to sustain.
