A smaller entry of lambs this week and quite mixed in terms of the quality on offer. Best meated types this week were still selling to a good premium with the majority of these £120 plus per hd with a top price of £145 form S & D Butler for some heavy weights. Other runs of note from P N & C Burden, L E Humphreys, C & J Georgetti & Sons, H V Link Partnership and M R Woodroofe all sold in excess of £125 hd. Leaner grass fed lambs are still selling over store prices provided they show a touch of meat, but lean types would be on a par with the store trade last Friday.

A larger show this week with the majority leaner grazing sorts pushing overall averages down. The best fleshed ewes were less money, than they have been, but good competition kept rates regularly at £90-£120 to a top price of £145 from C R & G Daws for some well fleshed Texel cross ewes. Medium sorts £70-100 with the leaner ewes £50-£70. Little being sold below these figures.

A much improved trade for store lambs with prices up some £5 per head on the previous sale.

The best stores sold readily around £85 and topped at £93.50 for a pen of Texel cross from H G Tompsett & Sons Ltd while medium sorts sold around £80 and only small long keeping lambs below £70. Buyers in attendance from both the North and the West Country in addition to a few more local customers ensuring competitive returns throughout.

If drought conditions continue and trade maintains at these levels store lamb vendors would be well advised to sell in the forthcoming sales rather than wait until later when lambs have lost condition.

A strong trade on the week with more cattle wanted to satisfy demand. The best Continental cross beef bred cattle selling readily around 250p with a Limousin cross steer £1648 (258p) and Charolais cross heifer £1559 (254p) from W Alexander (Shoreham) and Limousin cross steer £1528 (250p) R F & E A Simmons. The quality consignment of Limousin x Friesian steers from A J Down sold exceptionally well in the 230 to 250p bracket and grossing up to £1652,and averaging a favourable £1518 for the run of 10 cattle.

Native bred cattle keenly sought after with purebred Sussex steers £1471 (234p) G W Payne and £1442 (235p) E T Ledger & Son Ltd whilst a Friesian heifer looked well sold at £1305 (208p) from T Castle & Son.

A small show of cull cattle met another fabulous trade with fleshed cows particularly firm; confidence high in the feeding sector; and plainer cows, from beef or dairy, holding their rates despite the arid conditions in much of the country.

Store Cattle – 95 Sold

Plenty of customers in attendance ensuring competitive returns for the entry of dairy bred stores. A pair of Limousin cross heifers topped the market at £960 from F Henderson closely followed by a 24 mths Brown Swiss cross steer from C Kearl. A run of 15-18 mths mixed dairy breeds in the 350 to 400 kg bracket from A Lavender sold well with the Sussex x Friesian steers and heifers attracting the best prices at £840 and £800 respectively.

A run of Aberdeen Angus and Sussex x Friesian 6-7m youngsters topped at £500 for the steers and the heifers to £433 from R Winstone.

Customers in attendance for the store cattle despite the continuing dry weather and drought conditions.

Calves – 64 Sold

Slightly less numbers about this week but trade firmer with the cooler weather seemingly bringing a few more buyers out.

Topping today`s trade were a run of older British Blue bulls from J Warnock & Son which sold to £385, £330 and £310. Month old Blues from R & J Ledger would be the trade of the day with a top of £270 and £250. A single Simmental bull from R & J Ledger to £180. Natives to £225 for Aberdeen Angus from J W Boyd & Sons and Herefords to £175 (x2) from R C & J L Pickering & Sons.

Heifers to £310 and £260 again for older Blues from J Warnock & Son. Younger continental heifers generally £150 – £170, with Simmentals from R &J Ledger to £170. Native heifers to £150 for a good run of Herefords from R C & J L Pickering & Sons. Angus to £130 from P J Forknall with most native heifers trading around the £130 mark.

Dairy bulls a little easier overall but the better types still selling well with Flekvieh bulls to £200 from J E Scutt & Sons. Holsteins harder work with a top of £45 from R C & J L Pickering & Sons.

Weanlings – 5 sold

A small entry today with British Blue x bulls at 4 mths topping at £355, Blue x heifers 3-4 mths topped at £300.
