Sheep Sales Report

New Season Lambs –835 sold.

A smaller entry than last week and trade again improved, which is in part a knock-on effect of the serious lift in the store trade which has made the leaner lambs dearer. Best sheep often over £200/hd and topping at £211 from Dylan Isaac & Holly Chandler
Smaller sorts from 41-43kg that are sold with good finish are the best trading sheep selling at 350-360p/kg which is very quietly sneaking back up to the very strong levels we saw in early summer.
I feel trade will stay here in the short term as it is difficult to see where large numbers of these better fleshed types will come from over the coming weeks.

A good trade with more in the pens this week. Slightly more of the better fleshed sorts on offer but the majority still leaner grazing types. The best £150 – £180 on most occasions and to a top price of £205 from Masters Farms for strong Suffolk crosses. Medium sorts regularly £120 – £150 with leaner grazing types £80 – £115 throughout with only a very few sold below these figures.
We are seeing a very respectable trade helped on by the flush of grass so if you have ewes to sell do not hesitate to get them to us.
More numbers are wanted with strong demands and buyers present for all grades every week.

Cattle Reports

Finished Cattle –  57 Sold

More penned this week and back to the usual level of buying support. Trade improved, with the quality of the cattle also smarter, and pleasing to be able to get the very best back to just a touch under the 400p/kg mark. A level that has eluded the new auctioneer for some time. It still is eluding him, but we did get to 396p/kg this week for a superb heifer from Red Barn Farm. Good meat and finish on offer in all forms this week and many cattle selling from 350p/kg-380p/kg with good premium on offer for the better shaped heifers.
Beef types from the dairy herd were well received with the best from Alan Down topping at 356p/kg.
Trade is likely to lift a little in the autumn period as demand strengthens. With Christmas now just 100 days away processors will be making plans to increase their kill numbers.

OTM Cattle & Cull Cows – 43 Sold

Mostly dairy types amongst a decent entry of cull cows. The beef cows were better fleshed types and met a very firm trade making a mockery of current deadweight quotes. Nothing particularly smart amongst those beef cows but plenty 260-290p, and heavier types well past £2000/head. No feeders to test the market which remains strongly positive.

More dairy culls coming forward as winter feed supplies cause troubling calculations. Some good meat cows in amongst a, generally, lean entry sold extremely well with British Friesian types up to 273p and good meat Holsteins up over 250p, both grossing up over £2000/head. Plain cows 170-190p looking very well sold.

Calves again a good trade, all classes present, and the best selling famously, headlining at £760 for Limousin cross bulls from T Castle & Son.
J W Boyd & Sons Ltd.’s strong consignment seeing good prices with smart British Blue bulls topping at £680, heifers to £540. Friesian bull calves from T Castle & Son selling as well as ever, highly desired around the ring, and all between £330 and £405 – Black & White calves, of all grades, highly desired around the ring currently. Limousin cross calves from the same home were the market toppers, their bulls at £760 & £740. Returning, back to Ashford, Mr G Smith saw his Aberdeen Angus bulls reach £490 and his heifers to £400. Crossbred calves from GR Edgar & Son well sold with Blue x Jersey bulls and heifers 2-4 weeks to £290 and £270 respectively, Angus x Jerseys to £190 and £150 similarly.
Only the two in the weaned calf section, a 4-mth British Blue cross from J Howie to £900, and from A J Thompson & Sons a young, 10 week single-suckled steer, realising a pleasing £780.

Please inspect stock in good time to order replacement tags as, regrettably, any stock that are incorrectly tagged may not be offered for sale.
