New Season Lambs – 837 Sold
Top price per kg: 267p – A M & S J Lerwill
Top price per head: £133.00 – M Keeley (Agri Services Ltd)
A bigger entry this week but the general quality of lambs certainly not as good as we have been used to, with fewer hard fed and well finished lambs. Several store types on offer that were selling on a trade that was in line with Friday prices, and the best fleshed were selling from 240-265p kg to a top of 267p from A M & S J Lerwill. Several pens of stronger lambs over £130 hd form H V Link Partnership, M Keeley (Agri Services Ltd), P N & C Burden and C & J Georgetti & Sons.

Ewes: Top £154 – H V Link Partnership, Average £73.40
Rams: Top £129 – A J Harrison, Average £121.00
A slightly improved trade on last week. Again, very few well fleshed ewes in the entry. Those better types sold very well to a top price of £145 from H V Link Partnership and £139 from C & J Georgetti & Sons. A very high percentage of the ewes on offer would be suited to further grazing and were selling from £45-70 head, depending on condition, to a stronger company of buyers with recent rains no doubt helping.

Store & Breeding Sheep – Friday 9th September
5,831 Sold
The recent rain throughout the country encouraged more potential buyers to ringside and trade improved marginally on recent weeks. Fleshed lambs topped at £107.50 for a pen of Charollais cross from J C Loveridge while strong stores sold readily around £90, medium stores ranged in the £75 to £80 bracket and only small long-term sorts below £70.The show and sale of Suffolk x Mule ewe lambs attracted similar numbers to recent years although the general quality was not of the usual standard with several runs having suffered from the drought conditions. D Howard Farms, again, presented a superb run of 500 taking 1st prize and topping the market at £126 and a favourable average of £119.66 for their run. Generally, the best sold at prices around £110 while the medium and bottoms of runs all attracted a premium above store value. The first real entries of breeding stock sold very much as expected, and at levels reported at other markets around the country. Most Mule ewe tegs sold in excess of £150 and up to £157 from T Crick while Suffolk x Mule with more size and condition topped at £172 from C W Bull. Flock aged ewes sold to £140 for Suffolk x Mule 1 lambs from J C Loveridge.

A similar trade to a fortnight ago with the same slightly subdued feel. The entry of, generally, younger smaller looking calves adding further to reducing the averages. This is not surprising with sky high input costs combined with a strong milk price making it harder to justify putting size into calves rather than milk in the tank. The best still a strong trade but second grades and smaller types harder work in all areas, except for the dairy bulls which seem fairly stable for the minute. Bulls to £290 (x2) from H O Champneys Ltd for a good run of Simmentals, British Blues to £255 for a smart British Blue from R & J Ledger with others from Hickson Bros to £240 twice. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £205, £185 and £170 from Parrett & Son. Heifers topped at £300 for a lovely British Blue from D Murdoch & Sons with other Blues to £270 from W G & T A Manford and £265 from Hickson Bros. Aberdeen Angus heifers topped at £150 and £145 from Parrett & Son. Dairy bulls remain relatively buoyant with the, as ever, well followed Flekviehs topping at £150 from J E Scutt & Sons. Stronger rearing types of mainly Holstein Friesian and Friesians £60 – £100 with second grades £40 – £50 and Bobbies £5-£20.
Weanlings – 23 sold
Younger cattle with a long winter ahead are certainly facing a more cautious trade with input costs and fodder supplies of serious concern to buyers. A real mix of cattle on the wall today with bulls to £370, heifers to £380 for Aberdeen Angus from H O Champneys Ltd.
