Store and Breeding Sheep Sale report – Friday 29th July 2016


Our first store sheep sale for the season on a Friday saw a large crowd of both buyers and local farmers in the market. With a finished trade above the levels pertaining last year and large amounts or grazing available expectations were positive. The sale did not disappoint with lambs traded at levels well above last year as you can read below.

Report on trade: A good entry of just below 5,000 store lambs were penned for the first store sale of the season and a superb show of quality lambs were on offer with many in the entry which were close to being “finished”. Overall average of £59.81 which was £8.50 ahead of the corresponding sale last year which would be directly linked to the prime lambs price being roughly £10 up on the corresponding week last year.

Some very strong runs of sheep were sold to a full ring of buyers with some men from away not even getting started! Some runs of note included Raveningham Farms run of 122 Beltex cross lambs which sold to £66.50 and averaged £60 and Normanhurst Estates 218 Texel Cross lambs sold to £68 and averaged £64.20. Charolias crosses from E W Homewood topped at £74.50 and £72.50 from Pynn Contractors. A few Romney lambs were offered and they topped at £69.80 from Torry Hill Farms.

Breeding Sheep

In Ashford we welcomed pedigree Southdown sheep breeders and their potential customers for their National Premier Early Breeders show and sale with 40 out of 66 sheep penned sold and generally good sheep selling well particularly females.

In the show ring Irving Pallister stood in for Paul Humphrey as judge following a breakdown on the M25 preventing the Humphreys attending the sale. Principle prizewinners were best ewe lamb, female champion and show reserve champion, a Chaileybrook lamb by a homebred ram and best ram lamb and reserve male champion a lamb by Sarkozy both bred and exhibited by J M A Long, Bishops Frome, Worcester; best senior ram was Mrs K V P Potters Southern Cross Teddy; best shearling ram was male and supreme champion, Goodwood Commando by a Ridings sire from the Goodwood Estate, Chichester, West Sussex who also produced the best shearling ewe Caleigh by Ladywell Sam which was reserve female champion.

In the sale 400 guineas was top call for champion Goodwood Estates, shearling ram Commander to C T & P M Mannerings, Biddenden, Ashford. A further Goodwood shearling ram made 330 guineas to Naill O’Kane, Headcorn, Maidstone. 400 guineas also secured 2 Wakeham-Dawson & Harmer shearling ewes for Megan Chilcott, Highbridge, Somerset while the same seller and buyer exchanged further shearling ewes at 300 and 330 guineas twice. A ewe lamb from J M A Long made 300guineas to Ken McKeague, Scotland for his .

Sale averages: 17 Ewe tegs made to 400gns and averaged 260gns; 8 Ewe lambs made to 300gns and averaged 187gns; 17 Ram tegs made to 400gns and averaged 260gns; 5 Ram lambs made to 275gns and averaged 193gns and 3 older rams to 220gns and averaged 196gns.
