Store and Breeding Sheep Sale report – Friday 7th October 2016
This Friday saw one of the largest entries of stock (nearly 10,000 head) penned for a sale in Ashford and nearly 150 individuals purchased stock on the day. Prices achieved for ewe lambs again made headlines in the reports below. Read on for details …..

Report on trade: An improved trade for a large entry of lambs with an overall average of £58.30. crossbred lambs were keenly sought after with fleshed sorts in excess of £70, strong stores around £65, medium stores either side of £60 and the majority of small long term lambs £50 to £55. An increased entry of Romney wethers also met an improved trade particularly for the best which sold readily around £60 and an overall average of £51.28.
Several lots of ewe lambs on offer sold exceptionally well with Suffolk x Mules up to £85.50 from E & ME Brundrett and £84.50 from D Howard Farms while Romneys sold to £87 from G B Richards and Son, and £84 from S Witheridge and Texel crosses up to £70.50 from Watership Down Partnership.

This week saw a generally an easier trade for ewe tegs with the best around £125 and lesser sorts £80 to £95. A pen of Texel x Mule ewe tegs topped £134 from F B & C L Hobbs with Mules up to £130 from H W Snape & Son, £138 from Swallow Mill Farms, £126 from R & S Payton Farms and £125 from Little Boarzell Farm Ltd. The best of the Suffolk x Mules to £120 (x3) from R E Hanks and Romneys made up to £117 from J H Millen & Son.
An increased entry of breeding ewes included two main runs of Lleyn 3 & 4 lambers from T Telling & 3,4 & 5 lamb Mules from J & M Carr. The Lleyn ewes attracted lots of interest topping at £89 while the best of the Mules sold up to £68. Other top prices included Texel x Romney 1 lambers to £98 from C J & S E Fryer and Suffolk x Romney 1 lambers to £86 from H & J Noakes.

Report on trade: The last ring sale of the season saw good shaped rams with size attracting interest but demand for ram tegs away for these better sorts very limited. There was at no time a big crowd around the ring – it remains to be seen how demand this season plays out through the next 3 sales where rams will be sold, after the breeding ewes, in the pens.
The main vendors for this sale included J & C Maxwell who sold their 8 Charollais to £370 and averaging £321, Weeksland Charollais 4 tegs to £350 and averaging £296, N Balcomb & Son 9 Charollais to £340 (twice) averaging £315 and 11 Suffolks to £390 averaging £355 and R Mallows with 11 Texel, Texel x Charollais and Beltex x Charollais tegs to £430 (twice) averaging £365
