Sales Report – Friday 9th October
Store Sheep – 5,878 Sold
Auctioneers: John Rossiter 07557 392903 & James Cook-O’Connell 07780133678
Again a good entry of sheep this week with numbers on offer and just under 6,000 going through the ring. Trade is very strong for store lambs and the bigger the lambs, the bigger the demand, as many finishers now are chasing shorter term lambs as winter crops are not looking like they will yield as much as last year, therefore making the longer term lambs a less desirable prospect to some buyers. The biggest and best lambs sold well in excess of £130/hd on most occasions, with a top price this week of £151/hd from W J Hurley for some Suffolk cross ewe lambs with genuine stores topping at £138/hd from G Lawrence & Sons, closely followed by S Weeks & Sons at £137/hd and Gardners at £136/hd. Romney lambs were a very mixed entry, with the top price of £132.50/hd from G L Boulden & Son, the stronger types from £120/hd upwards and lesser Romneys trading either side of £100/hd, only very long terms types below.
Numbers of breeding sheep continue to come forward as we push into October with plenty of interest holding out for all grades. The shearling section saw a run of Romneys from R Maitland, which sold very well topping at £192/hd with others £190/hd and £185/hd (twice). Suffolk x Mule shearling from E W & R E Hanks topped at £252/hd with Charollais shearlings from D Napthine to £220/hd. A small number of breeding ewes got away well topping at £178/hd for Suffolk x Mules 2-4 lambers from M E Carlton.
We have good entries coming forward for our next sale on Friday 23 October to include a catalogued breeding ram sale with entries still open.
