Almost exactly 1,000 finished lambs penned this week, numbers are harder to find each week at this time of year with the bigger numbers coming out on a Friday in this part of the world. Trade was quite similar this week to last week, with a lot of the better fed and heavier types from £175-200/hd. Smaller lambs with good meat finish were in demand with these trading from 340-380/kg and some smaller crossbred lambs from Mrs Helen Bamber topping the day at 409p/kg. Heavy sheep topped at £203/hd from C & J Georgetti & Sons for some superb Texel lambs with Dylan Isaac and Holly Chandler taking a very close second place at £202/hd for some tremendous crossbreds. Top Price Ewes: £250.00 – R & N Warnock, Kent – Ave. £114.15

Trade on par with last week and a continued shortage of better fleshed ewes in the pens.
The best regularly £150 – £180 to a top price of £250 for superb Texels from R & N Warnock. Medium sorts £110 – £140 on most occasions with leaner grazing types £80 – £110 throughout with only 6 lots sold below these figures.
We would expect more ewes to come forward at this stage, however, a lack of rainfall has delayed weaning which has slowed down the usual numbers we expect to see coming forward at this stage.
More ewes are wanted of all grades in order to satisfy strong buyer demands with a positive trade being seen for all types.

Less on offer and with one main buyer currently on a business trip to Italy, trade was a little “leaner”, for want of a better word. Less quality on offer and therefore a little less spark in the trade. The better sorts on offer from Birt Bros sold on a similar trade with heifers to 359p/kg. Best price in the lump was a young Charolais bull form Highfield Park Farm at £2,607. More cattle will be present next week with full buying support reinstated.

Mostly plain dairy culls within today’s increased entry and pleasing to welcome a day of proper rain at last!
In fact, the beef cows were a better show and a stronger trade pointing clearly to a continuing strong trend this winter. Plenty of better younger cows up over 300p with stronger types grossing up over £2000/head.

A bigger show from the dairy sector and little flesh on offer in general. A good, fleshed cow from A Goddard & Son to 262p, £2040 with stronger cows 220-240p but plain boners more generally 160-190p/kg as boning costs against yield weigh heavily on processors.

A very mixed show of ages, shapes, breeds and sizes however this was of no concern with buyers keen to secure numbers early on.
Breeding cattle to kick off with the remainder of a herd dispersal of Sussex cows and calves from S S Gibb topping at £1700 which looked well sold considering the majority of cows carried plenty of age and they hadn’t seen the bull again. Gallagher Farms had strong Limousin cows which were 2020 and 2021 born and in-calf to a Limousin bull due January which topped at £2120.
Store bulls next from J Boomaars which topped at £2010 for 16 mth Aberdeen Angus and Charolais not as strong to £1760 with Herefords to £1640 all from the same home.
To start the store cattle we had G Dallaway with Limousin x Friesian heifers 11 mths to £1180 and a run of well reared Aberdeen Angus x Friesian steers 13-14 mths from G Lawrence & Son topped at £1600, with British Blue x Friesian steers to £1560 from the same home. R Brown had their single suckled Aberdeen Angus steers 10 mths to £1280 with heifers to £1360 and Simmental x Friesian steers from L Baker to £1140, and heifers from the same home to £1080. Good to see C E Price & Son back in the store ring with Simmental cross steers 8 mths to £1610, and tremendously well done Charolais cross and Aberdeen Angus cross steers 16 mths from J Boomaars to £2210, taking top call on the day. Hereford steers 18 mths from Alpha Farms to £1660 and Limousin x Friesian steers 17 mths from Miss L Hope, which were her first ever self-reared calves, and very well done reached highs of £1900. P R Lanham had British Blue x Friesian steers 20 mths to £1910 and Sussex cross steers from S H Gribble 16-20 mths topped at £1480 for the steers and £1410 for the heifers. Well done British Blue x Friesian 20-22 mths steers from the well supporting B Sutton were well sold topping at £2100 and a smart trio of Limousin heifers 23 mths from Gallagher Farms to £1950. Finally, a run of Lincoln Red steers and heifers 29 mths off the banks from Stone Farms Ltd saw £1940 for the steers and £1710 for the heifers.

Producers are reminded that all cattle require two ear tags with at least one large distance readable tag. Please inspect stock in good time to order replacement tags as, regrettably, any stock that are incorrectly tagged may not be offered for sale. Local authority inspectors will be taking note as stock comes to market.

Store & Finished Pigs – 54 Sold

More pigs about this week and a feeling of greater confidence, particularly with the run of stores.
Quality overall very mixed with the coloured pigs or overweights dominating the entry.
Coloured finished pigs from Canterbury Oast Trust selling to 130p/kg, 122p and 120p/kg grossing up to £146/head. Nice black pigs from A P & P C Rose to 142p, £132. Overweights to 70p, £138/head.
Little demand for sows and boars but getting sold to £28.
Good Saddleback stores to £44, £43 & £42 from Canterbury Oast Trust, but young coloured gilts remain hard work at £5.50.
