A few less this week but the better fed lambs were a bit dearer on the week, with averages up by maybe 10p/kg. These better meat lambs are getting shorter in supply around the country and are achieving good prices above the lesser quality and topping today at £213/hd from J Boomaars with C & J Georgetti & Sons also selling heavies up to 385p/kg and £184/hd. With the forecasted short supply of better meat in the coming weeks, we are likely to see an improvement in prices but with the reported lack of wholesale demand, predictions are becoming less and less accurate.

Similar numbers penned again this week with plenty of lean sorts forward on the day.
The best ewes regularly £150 – £180 and to a top price of £195 for Charollais from N A Balcomb & Son. Medium sorts £110 – £140 on most occasions with leaner grazing types £70 – £100 throughout. There is no doubt that the trade has become harder for all grades as more have come forward over the previous weeks. With the current weather conditions, we are seeing numbers that will continue coming forward in force now however the trade still looks very respectable with all variables taken into consideration.

Cattle Reports

Finished Cattle – 61 Sold

More on offer today with over 60 finished cattle and a few overage to follow them. The trade I would say was quite similar to last week but the cattle on the whole were quite a bit heavier with a larger number tipping the scales over 700kg. Top of these heavies was taken by Leggat Farming at £2,782 with the best heifers topping at 366p/kg from A J Thompson & Sons. Overall, the averages for the cattle on offer were almost exactly the same as last week and for the middle of August, this is still quite an acceptable level.

A respectable number of cull and overage, with a little more flesh on offer, met a stronger trade for both the slaughter and feeding animals.
No Continental cows forward but decent Sussex and Aberdeen Angus cows regularly 240-280p/kg and still able to top £2000. Top price to a younger Welsh Black cow at 292p k/g from W Alexander (Shoreham) Ltd.

Please inspect stock in good time to order replacement tags as, regrettably, any stock that are incorrectly tagged may not be offered for sale.
