The first sale of the season took place on Friday 31^st July and despite the challenging conditions around the country in terms of available grazing, and the larger than normal entry on the day which was approaching 7,000 lambs in the catalogue, the trade was very acceptable on the day. It is quite a rare occurrence for both buyers and sellers to go home from market content with the days business. Generally speaking, it’s usually too high for one or too low for the other, but this sale produced the correct and fair result for both sides with the buyers pleased with the sheep they bought and the sellers content with the prices they achieved in a challenging time for sheep farming. The crowd in the sale ring was said to be one of the biggest we have ever seen at a Friday sheep sale with not a single seat available around the ring. Buyers were present from across the UK and lambs went from Ashford to the West Country, East Anglia, Yorkshire and all counties in between.
The show and sale brought out some top quality lambs and the star of the show for the second year was Mr Alex Pynn who, with his daughter and assistant Bluebell, topped the sale and took first place in the show at £146/hd and his run of 252 store lambs averaged £136.45. the lambs were a credit to them and were deserving winners of the prize. Second place was taken by Matthew Wickens and third place by Jan Biddle, for the second year running. Thank you to our Judge Steve King and our sponsors Ariat Work.
Best store lambs that were suited to intensive short term finishing were obviously going to be the dearest on the day with these trading from £120-£145/hd, with the stronger end of the running store lambs from £105-£115 and only long term and small lambs below £100/hd.
