Report on trade: Always a sad day when we reach the last of our Friday sales in December but following a couple of years in 2023 and 2024 that were marred by the blight of the BTV virus, we really have got something to celebrate this season with records being broken over and over and one of the most successful store rings anywhere in the UK.
In terms of the final figures for the season, our lamb numbers were up on last year by about 3,000 head, but the big news is in the price per head. Across the whole season the price has increased by approximately £20 per head in comparison to 2024. Given the drought early in the season, this figure is very notable, and it is very good to see the store breeders really benefiting from the new era of sheep prices for what is actually the first time in many years. We would like to thank all our vendors, buyers, and staff for their support throughout the season, and we are looking forward to breaking more records in 2026.
Friday 12th December in particular was a smaller sale in terms of the rest of the year, but prices were once again very strong with many buyers not getting what they needed to fill their orders. The overall average of £117 is obviously less than other sale but so were the sheep on offer, with many end of the line clear ups included. The best lambs on the day did still see the strong prices of previous weeks with top on the day taken by some Texel ewe lambs at £146 hd from G Lawrence & Son. The stand out run of lambs on the day were presented by Mr Charlie Saunders with over 200 continental cross lambs with plenty of shape and scale and returned a very impressive average of £132 hd with buyers battling around the ring to buy these quality lambs. Let’s hope we see some back in the spring.
A lot of stronger lambs traded from £115 to £130 this week with less size on offer overall. Only very long term and clear up lambs are below £100 hd and Romney wethers topped at £127.50 with nearly all of these over £100 hd.
Roll on 2026….!
