New Season Lambs – 670 Sold

Top price per kilo – 387p – J Wayman, Surrey.
Top price per head – £179.00 – C R & G Daws, East Sussex.
A very small entry of lambs, with Friday`s sale of 5,000 lambs drawing some numbers out of the pens from Tuesday. When this happens, the lambs we sell on a Tuesday are generally very good quality and all well finished. This was certainly the case this week with some super lambs on offer selling on a trade like we have not seen for several weeks. The overall average of 340p kg is likely to be the highest in the country on the day, if not this week. Several pens of lambs were sold in excess of 350p kg and topped at 387p kg for some very smart continental lambs from Mr James Wayman. Heavier lambs have not lifted in price quite as much as the middle weight meated types and are selling form £150-180 head depending on quality and weight. If more numbers come onto the market, which they inevitably will do in the coming weeks, prices may ease back from these heights, but numbers look to be tight up to the Christmas period.

OTM Cattle and Cull Cows – 107 Sold
Another tremendous entry of cull cows, with a few overage, met a ring full of confidence with buyers keen to secure numbers. An entry largely of beef cows, post scanning, in what appears to be, from results, a difficult year for the breeding cow whatever their age and background.
Such is the perilous state of the beef livestock sector that demand is only growing stronger for beef cows of all grades to be fed to supply the processing sector.
Good beef cows readily over 300p with best meat cows pushing close to 330p and £3000 head whilst a large show of feeders of all grades were regularly up over 340p with many plainer, older cows at 250-280p looking very well sold. Competition fierce throughout.
Limousin 358p, 356p, 352p, 350p, £2516, £2346, £2303, £2144 A Boyd & Co, 358p, 328p, 324p, 322p, £2234, £2063 Campbell Bros, 342p, 326p, £2132, £2049 L Palmer & Son, 328p, 303p £2844, £2571 L E Humphreys & Son; British Blue 350p, £2254 Birt Bros, 304p, £1669 M & C Farms, 288p, £2429 A J Strand & Sons, 262p, £2105 T Maddocks; Angus 346p, £2004 M & C Farms, 276p, £2617 A J Strand & Sons, 264p, 262p, £2232, £1976 V & C Smith; Simmental 324p, 310p, £1698 M & C Farms, 316p, £1838 J Tassell, 294p, £1732 L Palmer & Sons; South Devon 300p, £1797 A & H Edmonds.
There are now more cows from the dairy sector now coming out nationally as the season moves on but rates, particularly for the fleshed types holding very firm. Sadly, for the industry, and producers, too many lean cows going straight for slaughter and unable to be taken to feed in the open market. Surely it is time for common sense to return to this argument.?
British Friesian 271p, 269p, 266p, 265p, £1965, £1918 Debden Court, 257p, £2014 R & J Ledger; Holstein Friesian 264p, 249p, 240p, £1976, £1839 J W Boyd & Sons.
Stock Bulls (3) Strong trade for the bulls on offer. Well fleshed Traditional Hereford 246p, £2062; leaner Sussex 232p, £1875 and Angus 224p, £2134
Overage (12) A smaller show of overage but all keenly sought after to kill or feed. John Berryman`s well fleshed OTM heifers 375p, 369p, 363p, £2622, £2469; Angus OTM heifer 355p, £2109 G L Boulden & Sons; Angus OTM steers 324p, £2135 T Hunter, Chichester; Red Poll OTM steers 310p, £1507 T R Marsh, Great Dunmow; Dexter 3+ steer 232p, £845 G J Ostridge.
