Report on trade: What a trade. Simply unbelievable demand in the ring for every lamb on offer, returning an average price, an all-time record, for store lambs through the ring in Ashford. The overall average price of £116, with all included, was achieved due to a packed ring of buyers, sometimes three deep, competing for the 5,000 lambs on offer. Several new faces present to buy big number of lambs, with many not even getting started on the day. This has been caused by the bulk of lambs being sold earlier this year when grazing was limited and now with the realisation of many buyers that they have got excess keep and roots, and they must have some lambs at all costs. This is not necessarily the best buying strategy, but very pleasing for the sellers around the ring who have had a tough summer raising the lambs in near drought conditions until recent weeks. A phenomenal trade with nearly all lambs other than very long termers over £100 head and any strong sheep £120+ to a top price of £137 from S M Scott, with Suffolk/Mule ewe lambs to £146 from D Howard Farms. Romney wethers also saw a tremendous uplift with these selling over £120 hd on several occasions to £127 from H V Link.
Just a few tegs this week, as to be expected, with the autumn sales coming to an end but buyers were present, and trade was on fire.
Texel cross tegs from V & M Tester to £195 and Suffolk x Mules from Miss R Thompson to £181. A flock dispersal from P H & Mrs P E Skinner saw their Texel cross tegs to £202 and pedigree Romney ewe tegs to £170. Charollais ewes from D J Morphett topped at £320 with flock ages ewes from H Crump & Son to £171 and Mules from G Worsley to £166. A reduction of Romney flock aged ewes from North Kent College topped at £154 with others to £151 from the same home.
Our second and final ram sale saw a wide variation in breeds and quality but everything sold well on the day as farmers sought rams at this late stage.
Texels topped at £880 from C F Fuggle and R & N Warnock, with Beltex crosses from C A Worley Farming Ltd to £780 and Blue Texels from R Partridge & Son to £400. E & M E Brundrett had their first ever selection of Charollais breeding rams on offer topping at £700 whilst established breeders B J Baker and J Coe with Charollais both selling to £820. Suffolks from C F Fuggle to £600 with others from R Partridge & Son to £450. Romneys to £620 from N A Balcomb & Son and Romneys again from G Homewood to £280.
We saw a strong trade for all grades with a clearance rate just short of 90% and an overall sale average for 111 rams of £440 per head.
The next sale is on November 14th and with many buyers not securing number yet, it is hard to see that the trade will drop back in any drastic manner.
